Sanyo Battery Wins Australian International Design Awards

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. announced that eneloop, rechargeable nickel-metal hydride battery, has won the consumer category prize in the 2009 Australian International Design Awards, Standards Australia's world renowned design recognition program.
The awards reward excellence in design and innovation, providing consumers with an independent indicator of quality and value for professionally designed products available on the Australian market. This award program represents Australia's only international design awards recognized by the country's national government for promoting Australian design both in and outside the country and for providing business opportunities on a global scale.
Sanyo's Dual Camera Xacti VPC-CA8 was also a finalist in the same category this year. This year's winning products were announced at an award ceremony held on May 29, 2009 in Melbourne, Australia.
In 2008, the eneloop received the German iF Design Award, and the Dual Camera Xacti won a "red dot design award" in Germany for its VPC-CA65 and VPC-HD1000 models in the same year, but this is the first time two outstanding Sanyo products have received recognition at the 2009 Australian International Design Awards. In Japan, the eneloop has received many design awards, such as the Gold Prize in Good Design Award 2006, and Gold Prize in Japan Package Design Award 2007, while the DMX-CG9 won a Good Design Award in fiscal year 2008.

Final Countdown to F-Gas Implementation

National governments have less than 3 months left to act in order to ensure that the F-gas Regulation starts work-ing in practice. According to the press release issued on April 2009 by the Eu-ropean Partnership for Energy and the Environment (EPEE), only 15 Member States will meet their obligations be-fore the Commission's deadline.
EU Member States must ensure that by July 4, 2009, only companies with duly certified technicians can purchase Fluorinated-gases for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump installa-tions. This restriction is a critical com-ponent of measures introduced by the Regulation to ensure reduced emissions of F-gases.

Energy Efficiency and Labeling Systems in Asia

A global environmental symposium titled 'International deployment of energy efficiency standards and labeling systems: Cooling Asia, heating Asian economics' was held on February 27 in Tokyo, Japan. The symposium was hosted by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), and the U.S.-based NPO, Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP). The purpose of the symposium was to strengthen the cooperative relationships that have been built between IEEJ, under contract with METI, CLASP and various governments in Asia to support the establishment of energy efficiency standards and labeling systems in these countries. In addition to keynote speeches by representatives from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, CLASP and IEEJ describing the current state of Japan's efforts and the direction of future projects, policymakers from China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam gave presentations on their respective country's energy efficiency standards and labeling policy. Following is a summary of the current standards and labeling (S&L) programs and national policies.

US Housing Starts Down 10.8% in March

Although the U.S. housing starts in February showed an increase over the previous month for the first time in eight months, those in March dropped again to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 510,000 units, or the second-lowest level since the start of statistics in 1959.
The multi-family sector pushed nationwide housing starts down 10.8% in March as production of single-family homes remained unchanged, according to numbers released on April 16, 2009 by the U.S. Commerce Department. Overall starts fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 510,000 units, due entirely to a 29% reduction on the multi-family side that largely offset a big gain in apartment and condo building in the previous month.

Views of the Residential AC Manufacturers Department of Abrava

Residential-use mini-splits have become the most promising segment of the Brazilian air conditioning market after attaining a 29% growth in sales in 2008 over 2007. This presents a sharp contrast to sales of window type air conditioners (WRACs), which showed a 21% drop in 2008. Whether this change lasts or is temporary remains a question. For a more accurate prediction, it is necessary to further analyze and understand factors that will cause expansion or contraction in demand for mini-splits in the domestic market.
