ISO to Establish ISO50001: Standard on Energy Management

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decided to establish an international standard on energy management for industrial plants, commercial facilities or entire organizations. In September last year, the first meeting of ISO's new project committee PC 242 which is to develop an international standard on energy management in Washington, DC. USA.
Twenty-five major countries, including Japan, the U.S, and European nations, have agreed on the creation of the new guidelines. Outlines will likely be drawn up by the end of May and presented to ISO members, with details finalized through the end of 2010.
The new standards, to be called the ISO 50001, is an international framework for managing all aspects of energy from its procurement to use. It has been developed to improve energy efficiency by offering technological and management strategies to organizations for attaining cost reductions and improving environmental performance. Also, this standard is not a sectoral standard developed specifically for the energy service industry. It is applicable to all companies, industrial plants, offices, commercial and other facilities. Therefore, it is said that, when this standard spreads, it can influence up to 60% of the world's energy use.
The creation of the new standards may prompt some Japanese companies to take action, as Western companies sometimes require their business partners to have an ISO certification.

AHRI Terminates Agreement with EUROVENT on Water-Cooled Chillers

Arlington, VA - The Liquid Chiller Section of the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) recently announced the termination of the mutual recognition agreement between EUROVENT and AHRI for Water Cooled Chillers. This was done to protect the credibility of the AHRI certification program amid numerous claims of "AHRI Certification" from chiller manufacturers whose products had not in fact been tested or certified by AHRI.
The mutual recognition agreement was established in 2000 for the North American and European markets to reduce testing costs for manufacturers that were members of both EUROVENT and AHRI. Since that time, there has been an influx of new manufacturers that are not common to both organizations, which AHRI felt diluted confidence in the performance of some equipment certified under the agreement.

Baltimore Aircoil Announces Strategic Alliance with Colmac

Baltimore Aircoil Company and Colmac Coil Manufacturing have announced the formation of a strategic alliance to provide AircoilT Evaporators to the industrial refrigeration market.
This agreement is a synergistic relationship that leverages the strengths of both companies by doubling the number of manufacturing facilities available and by providing additional product depth. It is our firm belief that by combining Colmac's technical expertise with BAC's manufacturing prowess we will provide more solutions and better service to the industrial refrigeration market.
"With this exciting new development, the two companies are leveraging Colmac's innovative technology and engineering expertise with BAC's strong brand, manufacturing know-how, and extensive distribution network," stated Colmac President Bruce Nelson.
Evaporators will continue to be manufactured in all materials of construction for ammonia, CO2, and glycol/brine refrigerants in both Midwest, and Colville, Washington, production facilities. As part of the new agreement, Colmac will distribute Aircoil evaporators along with its existing line of standard and custom industrial refrigeration evaporators and air - cooled condensers exclusively through the BAC representative network in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
