May 28 - IEA Conference: Heat Pumps Offer Huge Potential
More than 300 attendees met in the 9th International Energy Agency (IEA) Heat Pump Conference held from May 20-22 in Z?rich, Switzerland to discuss latest technical advances and challenges facing the heat pump industry.
Several key presentations focused on CO2 units as a cost-competitive and efficient way to replace traditional heating solutions.
Heat pumps could be a key solution to reduce emissions in the energy-intensive building sector, if governments and industry increase their joint efforts in promoting this technology on a global scale. This emerged as a key message from the Heat Pump Conference. More than 300 manufacturers, researchers, policy makers, and environmental analysts meeting at the HPC 2008 discussed not only technical progres, costs and environmental benefits of heat pumps, but also key policy drivers in different world regions:
International: Lawmakers and industry associations agreed that heat pumps are now one of the most cost-effective ways to replace fossil-fuelled heating equipment, like gas and oil boilers. According to the IEA, payback time for some heat pumps can be only 3 months to 2 years. However, consumers do not know about this. If half of all homes in OECD countries would use heat pumps, energy efficiency could be improved by 25% by 2020. The agency therefore insisted that the industry needs pace-setting countries that would spur the use of heat pumps not only in OECD nations but also in developing countries. The IEA has therefore already started an "outreach programme" to involve China, South Africa, Brazil, India and Russia. The IEA view was supported by the latest IPCC report identifying the building sector as the single most important area for cost-effective GHG mitigation, being much less costly than the transport sector.
May 27 - Lloyd Electric Acquires Luvata's Former Czech Facility
Lloyd Electric and Engineering Ltd (Lloyd Electric) has recently announced its acquisition of Luvata's former operation in Prague, Czech Republic. The 300-employee plant, which produces coil units for the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) industries, was divested from Luvata last year.
In August 2007, Luvata acquired ECO SpA, the world's foremost manufacturer of heat-transfer coils and coolers and was required by the European Commission to release the Prague operation to ensure continued fair competition in the market. Since that ruling, the Prague facility has been running as a standalone operation with its own, independent sales and management structure while awaiting a buyer.
The plant was acquired by Lloyd Coils Czech s.r.o., a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the acquisition. The SPV is owned by Lloyd Electric & Engineering Limited and its associate company and was advised by AZB & Partners in New Delhi, Weinhold Legal in Prague and MAQS in Stockholm.
Commenting at the time of the Commission's ruling, John-Peter Leesi, CEO and President of Luvata commented: "A healthy market cannot exist without fair competition and so we respect the Commission's judgment. We wish the best of futures to our former Czech company under its new owners and I hope it will continue with some of the Luvata tradition that made it so successful."
May 22 - SODEX ASTANA 2008 HVAC&R Expo
November 12-15, 2008
Venue: Alatau Sport Complex
Since independence in 1991, Kazakhstan has had such good growing economic and financial health that it has become the first former Soviet Republic to repay all of its dept to IMF, 7 years ahead of its schedule. The locomotive of planned expansion in oil production will take the country into the ranks of one of the top 10 oil producers soon. Due to this economic boom it has been a very attractive market for manufacturers all around the world creating a market potential and demand combined with the experience of SODEX in fair organizing.
WHY ASTANA
Today as the capital, Astana hosts 1,566.3 hectares of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) together with 155 facilities registered and whose construction are still going on. A second Free Zone is a considiration. Also together with the State Housing Programme at least 12 Million sqm of housing is expected to be built.Such an improvement in construction is an indication for need in HVAC&R equipment.
May 22 - CRAA Agrees to Be AHRI Certification Agent
AHRI has signed an agreement with the China Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Industry Association (CRAA), authorizing the association to serve as AHRI's exclusive certification agent in China. In this capacity, CRAA will promote the benefits of AHRI certification and assist Chinese equipment manufacturers with the certification application process.
This agreement, signed April 10 in Shanghai, does not authorize CRAA to certify or deny certification for any product. The agreement provides for CRAA training; AHRI document translation; CRAA certification program selection; and communication and promotional efforts in the U.S. and China. AHRI retains the right to all certification decisions.
May 20 - Chillventa Nuremberg 2008: On the home stretch
Chillventa 2008 is on the home stretch: Five months before the event, 603 companies and organizations have registered for a net display area of 29.609 m2 (as at 15 May 2008). The list of exhibitors is available at www.chillventa.de/exhibitors and is constantly updated. The industry's market leaders are virtually all there in N?rnberg in October - so a comprehensive market survey is guaranteed. The organizer N?rnbergMesse expects 800 exhibitors and some 25,000 trade visitors from all over the world.
"Only a few months to go to the first Chillventa - the number of exhibitors is growing almost every day, the supporting programme is taking shape all the time and visitor promotion has also started at full speed - we are very satisfied," says Gabriele Hannwacker, Exhibition Director of Chillventa N?rnberg 2008. Besides the 603 registrations, the companies on the list of exhibitors also include country pavilions from Great Britain, the USA, Spain, Turkey and China. Some 80 more individual companies have been announced for these pavilions, but they are not yet included in the list of exhibitors, so the present total number of exhibitors can be put at nearly 700.
The variety of the Chillventa supporting program
The supporting programme drawn up over the past months is an impressive reflection of the activities in the industry.
The programme is organized and designed by the associations and organizations, which as honorary sponsors are shaping the new face of the industry.
The variety of the programme covers the spectrum of the international refrigeration and air conditioning industry: from absorption refrigeration, natural refrigerants, energy efficiency, heat recovery, commercial and industrial refrigeration, energy-efficient fans, refrigeration in the food trade and reduction of CO2 in refrigeration and air conditioning systems to the use of heat pumps.
May 16 - ISK-SODEX ISTANBUL 2008 Expo, Turkey
ISK-Sodex 2008 Exhibition was organized by Hannover Messe Sodeks between 8-11 May in Istanbul Expo Center-CNR Expo / Istanbul, Turkey.

May 03 - Carrier Agrees with German Group for Five CO2 Plants
Carrier Corporation has signed an agreement with the ALDI SUD group, Monchengladbach, Germany, to install five more refrigerating plants using Carbon Dioxide (CO2) refrigerant at its German branches. The projects were defined and ordered at EuroShop 2008 in February and installation will begin in May.
ALDI S?D, a global acting discount retailer, commissioned its first Carrier CO2 refrigeration plant in 2006. Today ALDI SUD operates seven environmentally sound refrigerating plants in Germany, accounting for approximately 80 percent of all trans-critical CO2 plants in the food retail business in the country.
"Two years ago, ALDI SUD made a forward-looking decision to pursue an environmentally sound course with CO2 refrigeration, and we are most pleased to continue working with them," said Philippe Delpech, president, Carrier Commercial Refrigeration EMEA.
Carrier's innovative CO2OLtec? technology, which debuted in 2005, offers welcome relief to food retailers concerned about global warming and the environment. Today, Carrier's CO2OLtec? system is gaining traction in the European food retail segment, with particular success in Switzerland, Germany and Scandinavia. For low-temperature applications, 120 stores with a total of 3,900 kW installed cooling capacity are in operation today; in addition 22 stores are equipped with CO2OLtec? technology for medium temperature with a total capacity of 4,000 kW.
