February 27 - Daikin Unveils High-Efficiency Centrifugal Chillers

Daikin Applied Systems, a subsidiary of Daikin Industries, has unveiled and will start receiving orders for 6 models (400 - 700 RT) of high-efficiency two-stage centrifugal chillers used for applications such as industrial cooling and large air conditioning equipment in large buildings.
High-efficiency two-stage centrifugal compressors used for the new models have adopted a two-stage economizer cycle for raising the cooling capacity with optimum control of refrigerant in two stages. Adopting ODP-free R134a as refrigerant, they have attained the industry's top-class COP of 6 - 6.3 for 400 - 700 RT chillers.
The control panel has a moving touch panel with a large display screen which has been popular. Also, by responding to general-purpose networks such as the BAC-NET and LON, it has become possible to connect the chiller unit to a monitoring system, thus simplifying the management of operation/maintenance.
The new chillers have been developed by fusing Daikin?s know-how, nurtured through R&D with air conditioners (ACs), with IHI?s expertise with rotary machine technologies such as turbochargers and jet engine.

Following the current introduction of 400 - 700 RT models for the domestic market, Daikin intends to develop 800 - 1,500 RT models for further expansion of its centrifugal chiller lineup.
So far, the company has realized a COP of 6.4 for models above 1,000 RT, and exhibited its 1,000 RT model at HVAC&R JAPAN 2008 held in February in Tokyo.
Daikin also intends to expand its centrifugal chiller business globally by introducing their products in the USA, China and other countries.

February 20 - JARN's Interview with President of Carrier Corporation

More than a century ago, in 1902, Dr. Willis Carrier, the founder of Carrier Corporation, invented modern air conditioning. A hundred and six years later, at the beginning of 2008, we at JARN paid a special visit to Carrier, the world's largest provider of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions, and had an interview with Mr. Geraud Darnis, the President of Carrier Corporation.
At the beginning of the interview Mr Darnis said "we at Carrier are very proud of the legacy of our founder, and the father of modern air conditioning, Dr. Willis Carrier. Air conditioning has played a very important role in the development of human civilization. Residential air conditioning has enabled people to live more comfortably in hot and humid climates such as Japan, Singapore, India, the southern U.S. and many other places. Commercial air conditioning made it possible to build high-rise buildings where people could work in a productive environment. Modern modes of travel would be very uncomfortable or impossible without air conditioning".
For further detail of the interview, read the February 25 issue of JARN.
