May 31 - McQuay Receives Service Award from Dubai Civil Aviation Dept.

The Dubai Department of Civil Aviation has presented McQuay International with an Outstanding Service Award for the company's excellent performance in servicing and maintaining the Dubai International Airport (DIA) chiller plant. In April 2006, McQuay Factory Service assumed comprehensive maintenance responsibilities for the chiller plant, which was operating at only 60 percent of its capacity with questionable reliability. After a detailed assessment by the McQuay service office, a comprehensive program was established to ensure 100 percent reliable plant operation. Working night and day, McQuay Factory Service technicians from the regional office in Dubai performed the necessary repairs and maintenance that would ensure successful operation during the peak summer months, without interruption to the comfort of the airport. Today the plant is running at 100 percent capacity.

The award was presented by H.H. Sheik Ahmed Bin Sayeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates, to Sanjeev Kumar, the regional Service Manager for McQuay Factory Service. The award recognizes McQuay's valuable contribution to the continuous success of the Department of Civil Aviation and the Dubai International Airport.

The chiller plant was installed in 1997 as part of the airport's $540 million (USD) expansion. Recognized as a key aviation hub in the Middle East, DIA recently completed a second construction phase that includes a new terminal and concourses designed to accommodate an estimated 60 million passengers by 2010.

McQuay International delivers engineered, flexible solutions for commercial, industrial and institutional HVAC requirements with reliable products, knowledgeable applications expertise and responsive support. McQuay products and services are provided through a worldwide network of dedicated sales and service offices.

May 31 - Honeywell Announces Price Increase on R134a

On May 23, 2007 Honeywell announced a price increase of 10 percent on bulk and packaged R134a refrigerant, effective immediately, or as agreements permit. The increase is for products sold to customers in the Asia Pacific region.

Honeywell cited increased costs for raw material, energy and freight as the reasons for the price change.

May 26 - Danfoss Refrigeration and AC Lab Launched in China

After one year and two month of construction, equipment import and adjustment, Danfoss Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Laboratory formally was launched in Danfoss Wuqing Factory in China in early April, 2007. Danfoss has invested 30 million RMB (USD$3.9 million) to build the 2000 square-meter laboratory, which will be jointly managed by Automatic Control Department and Compressor Department of Danfoss Refrigeration and Air -Conditioning Division. The technology level of the newly launched laboratory is on a par with and even more advanced in some respects than Danfoss' other laboratories in Europe and America. Its objectives are to provide comprehensive technical service to RA clients in Asia Pacific and around the globe including technical support, products application testing and quality tracking while being dedicated to product design and development focusing on Asia and Pacific markets.

The Wuqing laboratory can conduct a full range of testing including enthalpy differential test, TXV thermo expansion valve test, compressor capacity test, compressor reliability test, moisture test and electric machinery locked rotor test and relevant accessorial tests. The project staffs now are mainly focusing on expanding capacities of current testing technologies, building up new testing technologies including a noise vibrancy test workshop, a pressure fatigue test platform and a parallel connection units testing platform. All of the above is expected to be completed within one year.

May 22 - Denso Michigan Receives EPA Performance Award

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a Performance Track Environmental Performance Award to DENSO Manufacturing Michigan (DMMI) during a special awards ceremony on May 9.

The Performance Award recognizes National Environmental Performance Track members that have demonstrated exemplary environmental performance during their participation in the Performance Track Program, the EPA's most comprehensive environmental leadership program.

"EPA's Performance Track partners are ready, willing and able to go well beyond mandated requirements-proving that doing what's good for the environment is also good for the bottom line," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson.

The Performance Track program recognizes and drives environmental excellence by encouraging facilities with strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. Members typically set four public, measurable goals to improve air, water and land quality.

DMMI's efforts included:

  • Generating nearly 1,780 fewer tons of solid waste in 2005 than it did in 2003, due to minimizing aluminum scraps and increasing the use of returnable containers.
  • Eliminating the use of hexavalent chromium through process enhancements.
  • Reducing per-unit emissions by 6 percent by recovering heat from exhaust and reducing utility consumption during production lulls.
  • Reducing water consumption by 14.5 million gallons through process improvements.

May 19 - ASHRAE to Provide Energy Guidance in Clinton Program

ASHRAE will play a primary role in former President Bill Clinton's initiative to reduce energy consumption in existing buildings by providing design guidance and tools to reach energy efficiency targets.

On May 16, Clinton announced the creation of a global Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program, a project of the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI). This program brings together four of the world's largest energy service companies, five of the world's largest banks, and 16 of the world's largest cities in a landmark program designed to reduce energy consumption in existing buildings.

CCI and its partners, including the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and U.S. Green Building Council, will assist participating cities with their initiation and development of programs to train local workers on the installation and maintenance of energy saving and clean energy products.

"Climate change is a global problem that requires local action," said President Clinton. "The businesses, banks and cities partnering with my foundation are addressing the issue of global warming because it's the right thing to do, but also because it's good for their bottom line. They're going to save money, make money, create jobs and have a tremendous collective impact on climate change all at once. I'm proud of them for showing leadership on the critical issue of climate change and I thank them for their commitment to this new initiative."

"ASHRAE is in the best position to provide immediate support to the cities seeking guidance through the Clinton Climate Initiative due to our 30-year involvement in design guidance for energy conservation for both new and existing buildings," ASHRAE President Terry Townsend said.

Townsend notes that most guidance developed for the HVAC&R industry focuses on new construction, which represents only 2 percent of the building stock in the United States.

As such, ASHRAE currently is working to provide energy guidance in existing buildings through its Advanced Energy Design Guide series. This existing buildings guide, developed in collaboration with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the U.S. Green Building Council with participation by BOMA and the U.S. General Service Administration, will show building owners how they can initially reduce their energy consumption by 30 percent. It is tentatively scheduled to be available in fall 2008.

ASHRAE also provides guidance through its Standard 100, Energy Conservation in Buildings, which provides procedures and programs essential to energy-conserving operation, maintenance and monitoring, and Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

The Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program will provide both cities and their private building owners with access to the necessary funds to retrofit existing buildings with more energy efficient products, typically leading to energy savings between 20 to 50 percent. Those involved include:

. Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Inc, Siemens and Trane will conduct energy audits, perform building retrofits, and guarantee the energy savings of the retrofit projects.

May 16 - Copper Price Records All-Time High

The domestic electrolytic copper price and overseas nickel and lead prices have all recorded all-time highs. Reflecting the brisk demand in China, nonferrous metal prices have been soaring since last year. If this upturn continues, the industry will be forced to make further efforts for overall cost decreases or turn to price increases.

On May 7, Nippon Mining & Metals Co. raised the electrolytic copper price to ?1,050,000/ton, up ?50,000. The previous all-time high copper price, recorded in May 2006, stood at ?1,000,000. The ?50,000 jump was the result of international market prices increases due to a stringent supply and demand relationship.

The nickel price at the London Metal Exchange (LME) which serves as an international price indicator, rose to US$53,100/ton on May 4, up US$1,550 from the previous day, topping the all-time high recorded on April 5 this year. The lead price also jumped to US$2,120, up US$33 over the previous day.
