September 27 - Petra Products Cooling Hawaii
Petra is always searching for new markets for expansion. Considering
sustained sales in the USA for over five years and with the building boom taking
place in Hawaii, Petra felt that the next step is to broaden their market reach
to include Hawaii. Hawaii is known to have one of the most varied and harsh
climates of all the states. Local climates range from being very wet to other
areas being dry and sunny during the same season.
Moana Pacific
Petra supplied the HVAC units for the Moana Pacific residential condominiums
developed by KC Rainbow Development. Located between Downtown and Waikiki, as
well as within walking distance to Ala Moana Beach Park, the Moana Pacific
condominiums offer a luxurious living experience with a view of the Hawaiian
beach.
This project was supplied with 320 T.R. (1125 kW) water-cooled rooftop package
units. Petra design engineers were faced with the challenge of having to custom
design the units in a T-shape to fit the available space. The units were also
supplied with a hot gas reheat coil to lower humidity. Due to the shape of the
unit, Petra engineers designed the units to be shipped in parts but made the
necessary provisions for easy reassembly and installation on-site without the
need for any pipe brazing.
September 21 - Submissions for 2007 AHR Expo Innovation Award
August 31, 2006 - Submissions are now being accepted for one of the most
prestigious honors in the HVAC/R industry - the 2007 AHR Expo Innovation Awards
Program. The fifth annual competition is designed to encourage the development
of new products that are both creative and useful, meet today's HVAC/R demands,
and feature new technology that will have a significant impact on the
residential, commercial or industrial markets.
Sponsored by International Exposition Company (IEC), the American Society of
Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the
Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), the 2007AHR Expo Innovation
Awards competition seeks out products and solutions that meet today's complex
energy challenges, offer innovative design, provide value, and have useful
applications.
The panel of judges is made up of specially selected ASHRAE members who are
knowledgeable about a wide variety of products. Each year, the industry sees
imagination become reality with submissions in nine product categories: Building

September 18 - Japanese Commercial AC Price Hikes
Following Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (Melco) and Toshiba Carrier, which
announced their commercial AC price increases in August, Sanyo Electric Co.,
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Hitachi Appliance also announced their
commercial AC price increases. Price increases of around 15% were officially
announced in turn by Hitachi, MHI and Sanyo. They judged that, due to the
copper, aluminum and other material price hikes, they cannot could not absorb
procurement cost increases through rationalization alone. Daikin has not yet
expressed an intention to increase its commercial AC prices. Steps the company
will take from now here on are worthy of watching.
To enhance commercial packaged air conditioner (PAC) production efficiency, MHI
has decided to transfer production facilities to Thailand and China. Judging
that "since material price hikes are a phenomenon occurring globally, it is
too optimistic to expect that our production cost will drop simply by shifting
our production facilities to Asia. The material cost -pushincreases can no
longer be absorbed with corporate efforts alone," MHI decided to raise
commercial PAC prices ahead of competitors.
On the other hand, Daikin said, "To lead the industry, we requested a 10%
price increase twice in 2004 and 2005 at the anticipated risk of our share
drops. So, we'll not easily be able to follow our competitors here."

September 16 - ACC Offers Compressors with Various Features
The new S range
The S range of compressors has a new look. In addition to the modification of
the internal suspension system done in late 2005, ACC is adding a completely
redesigned case that gives it the look it deserves: the one of an improved and
renovated compressor.
The S range ranges between 26 and 34cc, with models for both HMBP and LBP,
working with HFC's R134a (GS) and R404A (MS).The renewed S range compressors are
also working with R22 in order to serve those clients still using this gas.
The new case extremely reduces the compressor's aerial noise by 5 dB(A) when
compared to the current range, in addition to the robustness provided by the
redesign of the internal suspension previously made last year by ACC.
The new case for S range does not affect the dimensions of the compressor so
can be easily fitted in ACC's customers' appliances without major changes .The S
models mounted in condensing units will also incorporate the new case.
CO2 Project
ACC from its R&D laboratories in Spain has been actively working in a
project of compressors that use the R744 (CO2) gas as refrigerant. A new model
of 2.5cc has been added to the initially planned of 1.5cc, always for use in
HMBP applications.
The design of the new case has been completed achieving a lower weight and
higher pressure resistance complying with the security requirements that are
expected to be demanded from CO2 compressors. They can be classified in a class
lower than Class I according to the European Guideline for Pressure Equipment (PED,
just as it happens to current HFC and HC compressors.
September 9 - Melco Unveils New Heat Pump Chillers
From October 1, Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (Melco) will release the F Type

chillers (cooling/heating) and air-cooled chilling units (cooling-only) for
large- and middle-scale sized air conditioning systems for buildings and
factories. All models in the F Type have ccleared thea cooling/heating average
COP of 3.58, and those in the FII Type have realized the industry's top
compactness while maintaining equipment efficiency comparable to that of their
predecessors series.
The newly released F Type air-cooled heat pump chillers and cooling-only
chilling units each come in 7 each highly-efficient and compact models of
high-efficiency and compact series from 40 to 180 hp, while the FII Types also
each come in 7 each highly-efficient and compact models of high-efficiency and
compact series from 40 to 160 hp.
For replacement jobs, which occupy make up more than 50% of total chiller
demand, more compact equipment is required towith less restrictions on
introductionallow freer installation in areas of restricted access is required
to reinforce the air conditioning capacity under limited installation
conditions.
To meet these requirements, Melco has releases released new lines of air-cooled
heat pump chillers and air-cooled chilling units.

September 6 - Warm Weather Boostss AC Sales in Turkey
Sales of air conditioners grew by nearly 15 percent compared to the same
period last year, said the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Manufacturers'
Association (ISKID) head A. Metin Duruk.
According to Duruk, this increase is a result of the recent heat wave.
"One reason for the increase in sales was the warm weather since July;
another was increasing signs of confidence in the overall economy. I believe
that all producers will sell all of their air conditioners and stocks will be
finished by the end of this summer, " said Duruk.
Turkey's air conditioner market has previously been among the world's top 10,
and sixth in the Europe, said Duruk. However, sales figures have recently risen
to place Turkey eighth in the world and third in Europe, he added.
Turkey is not only an important market for air conditioners, but also a main
producer. Turkey is on its way to becoming a European center in air conditioner
manufacturing. The Turkish air conditioner sector will grow [in the near future]
by 20 to 25 percent to reach a [annual] production figure of 350,000 units.
Duruk said that buying air conditioning equipment was not necessarily an end to
the problem of overcoming warm weather; correct installation was also essential.
It is very difficult to find competent mechanics in this field in Turkey.
Trained and skilled personnel are scarce, he added.
September 1 - Sanyo and KOBELCO Tie up for Screw Technology
Dalian Sanyo Refrigeration Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sanyo Electric Co., and
Kobe Steel, Ltd. (KOBELCO) have recently agreed to a tie up for electric
water-cooled screw chiller technology and signed an agreement for that will
further reinforcement of competitive power and assist in the expansion of Sanyo
Electric's refrigeration/air conditioning and commercial application business in
China and increase their competitive power.
Established in 1992 as a J.V. company of Sanyo and Dalian Bingshan Group, Dalian
Sanyo has developed an integrated business for absorption chillers; as and
gas-fired large commercial air conditioning equipment covering their
manufacture, sales and services, Dalian Sanyo has now secured the thereby
securing No. 1 share in the Chinese market. From 2005 the company set about
manufacture, sales and services of commercial gas heat pump air conditioners (GHPs),
aiming to attain sizable business expansion along with the back of the spread of
gas infrastructure throughout China.
KOBELCO, with sophisticated screw chiller technology, is Japan's top
manufacturer of electric water-cooled screw chillers having sophisticated screw
technology. The ultra high efficiency and compact "High-Efficiency Mini
(HEM)" series released in October 2003 has been highly rated by many
customers, and more than 200 units have already been sold in Japan for
building/factory air conditioning and other industrial applications.
In China, where the commercial central air conditioning market is growing
steadily, the air conditioning screw chiller market is sized at 8,000 units, or
about 10 times larger than that in of Japan, and is predicted to grow at an
annual rate of about 15% for over the coming next 5 years.
