January 24 - Solid Global Growth Expected for 2006
The world economy achieved a stable growth in 2005 despite impacts from surging oil prices and is likely to continue a solid growth next year.
Overall global economic growth hit 5.1% in 2004, a record high in 30 years, and analysts had predicted a moderate slowdown in the pace of world economic growth for the year 2005.
Nevertheless, the 4.3% growth for 2005 and 2006 forecasted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in September is still healthy by historical standards.
The U.S. economy managed to gain a relatively rapid growth despite impacts from rocketing oil prices and natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. In the U.S., there are signs indicating that housing investment, which has sustained the nation's economy, is beginning to slow down, and the real GDP growth rate in 2006 is likely to drop to 3.3% from 3.6% in 2005.
On the other hand, economic growth rates in other major nations and regions are predicted to increase in 2006 in general. China and India, the two major developing nations, continued the strong momentum of economic growth, which also added a spur to regional economic performance. Considerably high growth rates are expected in other Asian countries. Firm growth will also continue in emerging countries such as Brazil and Russia, economic analysts predict.

January 16 - Carrier Introduces Hybrid Heat System
Strengthening its position as a leader in innovative heating and cooling systems, Carrier Corporation, USA, recently introduced the next advancement in the growing trend of energy efficient products, a Hybrid Heat system. With fuel and energy costs continuing to rise, and a colder than predicted winter hitting many parts of the country, homeowners are becoming increasingly apprehensive about properly heating their homes. A Hybrid Heat system is a fuel-saving alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems that combines a furnace with a heat pump, rather than an air conditioner. This marks Carrier's latest innovation in its commitment to the conservation of energy and total comfort solutions for homeowners.
"For homeowners, the end of inexpensive heating gas and oil and the concern over energy efficiency has become a reality," says Halsey Cook, president, Carrier Residential and Light Commercial, North America. "A Hybrid Heat system is the next phase in responsible treatment of our environment by reducing energy consumption, which will help to lower monthly heating bills this winter."
Happy Homes, Healthy Environment
The secret behind a Hybrid Heat system is Carrier's state-of-the-art heat pump. A heat pump works as an air conditioner in hot weather, but can also reverse the process and heat the home when cold weather arrives. Rather than burning fuel to generate heat, the heat pump moves heat without a flame, making it a more efficient method of heating a home. Additionally, some Carrier heat pumps feature non-ozone-depleting refrigerant.
Traditionally, heat pumps, which operate using electricity, are most popular in warmer regions where temperatures do not typically dip as low as they would in colder climates during the winter months. In colder regions, homeowners frequently need a furnace because temperatures often drop below freezing in the winter. However, with the elevated price of oil and gas, heating with a gas or oil furnace may be more expensive than using electricity.
January 12 - Toshiba To Buy Westinghouse For $5 billion
Toshiba Corp. on Monday agreed to buy Westinghouse Electric Co., a major U.S. builder of nuclear reactors, for a reported 5 billion dollars.
British Nuclear Fuels, the parent of Westinghouse, gave Toshiba priority rights to negotiate. Four other U.S. and Japanese companies, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and General Electric Co., had been seeking to acquire the U.S. firm.
Toshiba will provide over half the capital and also will seek investments from Marubeni Corp. and major U.S. engineering firm Shaw Group Inc. The company will take over all the assets of Westinghouse's nuclear operations, including employees.
The interest in Westinghouse was fueled by the introduction of an amended U.S. energy law in August 2005 that promotes nuclear power, as well as by China's plans to build a number of new nuclear plants. Toshiba intends to strengthen cooperation with Westinghouse by jointly operating facilities, conducting exchanges of engineers and developing worldwide markets.
January 8 - 2006 AHR Expo Chicago Sets New Record
Westport, Connecticut- January 3, 2006 - With less than a month to go, AHR ExpoA 2006 in Chicago, January 23-25th, is already breaking records as the largest event in the Show's illustrious 76-year history.
According to show management, more than 1,900 companies have already reserved 409,555 net square feet of exhibit space. These numbers would make AHR Chicago 2006 the biggest show on record, surpassing 400,416 net square feet of space at AHR Expo 2003 in Chicago and 1,871 exhibiting companies at AHR Expo 2005 in Orlando.
"The growth of the Show can be traced to many factors including the new industry segments and show features that have been added during the last couple of years," said Clay Stevens, President of International Exposition Company. "We've added a new Green emphasis to the Show, several new associations have joined the growing number of endorsing organizations, there is a much larger international presence, new education sessions have been created, as well as industry certification programs."
Stevens also mentioned that there is no other event in the world, focused strictly on Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditiong and Refrigeration, that exceeds the size and scope of the AHR Expo.
The international presence at the show has also grown. According to Show Management, 314 companies from 39 countries will be displaying their products at the Show in Chicago.
January 4 - 35th Mostra Convegno EXPOCOMFORT 2006
A Press Conference has been called in Milan, Italy, on November 8th to present journalists with the latest news on the next edition of one of the largest European Exhibitions and Congress for heating, air conditioning, plumbing technology, bathroom fittings, thermal accessories, mechanical tools.
The exhibition will be held from February 28th through March 4th 2006.
The major news is that Exhibitions and Congresses will take place at the new Fair Ground of Pero-Rho, one of the latest realizations of the recent years, which has been inaugurated in September 2005.
This year Mostra-Convegno will be completely dedicated to "Comfort and Living Technology" which must be achieved in full respect for outdoor environment.
Mr. Arturo Colantuoni Sanvenero, Managing Director of Fiera Milano International, highlighted that the new exhibition space, very well connected to town, has a total surface area of 140,000 square meters, on a covered surface of 345,000 sqm plus 60,000 sqm uncovered area. This will allow an 13% increase in the area dedicated to the heating and 16% increase for the area of refrigeration. 1,600 exhibitor companies will be present at the Mostra Convegno Expocomfort 2006; a special International Council has been created to monitor the technical and design patent rights of exhibitors, which all companies have adhered to.
January 1 - Fedders Announces results of 1st to 3rd Quarters of 2005
December 30, 2005 - Fedders Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of air treatment products, including air conditioners announced that it filed its Forms 10-Q for its first, second and third quarters of 2005. The prior year has been reclassified to reflect the sale of the Company's Melcor subsidiary as a discontinued operation. Melcor was sold in October, 2005 for $17.4 million.
The filings had been delayed for two reasons. First, the Company filed its Form 10-K for 2004 on September 30, 2005, and the Forms 10-Q preparation needed to follow the Form 10-K filing. Second, the Company's external auditors did not stand for re-appointment, and new auditors needed to be engaged following the Form 10-K filing.
For the nine months, net sales decreased by 27.4% to $258.7 million compared with $356.5 million in the prior-year period. Net sales within the HVACR segment decreased by 30.2% during the period due primarily to increased inventory levels of room air conditioners at customers in key North American markets, caused by cooler-than-normal summer weather in 2004. The warm summer in 2005 significantly reduced inventory levels in distribution channels but did not result in additional sales to channel customers. As a result of the Company balancing its production and inventory with demand, inventory levels declined to $84.0 million at September 30, 2005 from $126.2 million one year earlier.
Partly offsetting this sales decrease were increased sales of commercial air conditioners from the Addison acquisition, sales from the Islandaire acquisition, and a 17.0% increase in sales within the Engineered Products segment.
