September 28 - Ebm-papst EC Technology Provides Good Climate

ebm-papst EC technology in compact ventilation systems made by DionX high quality of air serves to keep people healthy and provides a good climate in rooms. This is where ebm-papst and DionX see their commitment. And this is why the compact ventilation systems offered by DionX, an Ireland-based manufacturer of air-quality systems, rely on the ebm-papst backward curved high-performance centrifugal fans with newly developed EC external-rotor motor. Up to three fans in size/of type R3G280 and R3G400 are used in the two basic DionX units AQC400 and AQC600.
These DionX systems are mainly used to provide and maintain excellent air quality and are thus ideally suited for use in hotels and restaurants, airports and hospitals and also in classrooms.
In their upgraded version, these highly sophisticated ventilation systems not only guarantee an air exchange rate adapted to the actual demand, plus heat recovery and filtering function, but inside air is also warmed up or cooled down as requested.
Just looking at the various fields of application makes it obvious that the fans have to meet tough specifications as to controllability, low-noise performance and efficiency.
The ebm-papst EC fans are characterised by their simple open and closed loop controllability. The proven ebm-papst interface with its linear control input facilitates the precise control of the airflow that is actually demanded. Their integrated electronics make these fans very compact, thus making it possible to reduce the system dimensions to an absolute minimum. The fans can be directly connected to the mains supply (230V, 50/60 Hz).
As the fan speed can be controlled to actual demand and as the commutation approach is optimised as to acoustic performance, only an absolutely minimal noise is ever generated.
Other than conventional AC motors, EC motors have efficiencies of at least 80%, even when operated under partial load.

September 12 - Shanghai: Residential Quarters Starts Using "Ice Thermal Storage"

Under the current situation of tense electricity consumption during the peak time in Shanghai, an ice thermal storage central AC system, which makes full use of off-peak electricity during the night, can achieve a balanced power supply through peak clipping and valley filling. Recently, the launching ceremony for the campaign of "building a resource-saving city and implementing energy-saving activities for a million families" was held in the residential quarter of Luyikaixuangong in Changning District, the first residential quarter in the Shanghai area to start using the ice thermal storage central AC system. However, due to the high cost, there is still no other residential quarter using such a system at present.
The ice thermal storage central AC system makes use of off-peak electricity (valley load time) during the night to store ice and melt the ice stored for cooling during the day, this not only realizes the energy conservation, but also embodies healthy requirements for environmental protection. This project can transfer 429,000 kWh of electricity consumption from peak time each summer, which accounts for 31.9% of total electricity consumption. This campaign of "energy-savings for a million families" is sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Civilization Office in collaboration with such units as Shanghai Municipal Water Affairs Bureau, Shanghai Municipal Women's Federation, and Wenhui Daily.
The residential quarterq o f Luyikaixuangong was built in 2003. Its phase II project has a total floor space of 71,000 m2, including 5 tall buildings with 506 households in total.
They are all cooled by the ice thermal storage system in this residential quarter in summer, where the temperature remains at about 26oC. It is estimated that if the ice thermal storage system is not employed, the daily electricity cost of this residential quarter in summer will reach more than 5,000 RMB yuan, whereas by using this system, the daily electricity cost will only be just over 3,000 RMB yuan.

?The VCC is equipped with an engine of permanent magnets and a frequency reverser that identifies when the refrigerator needs higher cooling capacity and than increases its rotation, or in the opposite case, reduces it when the ideal internal temperature was reached.

September 8 - AC Demand Expected Negative Growth in China

In July, the continuous high temperature eventually let AC makers take a breath. However, the Market Economy Research Institute of the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC) predicted that the demand for ACs in the domestic market in 2007 will show negative growth for the first time. In this refrigeration year, the growth of the total market demand will keep on sliding down to 6% from the growth level of 8% in 2004.
Confronted with this possible oncoming crisis, domestic AC makers have already began to try their utmost to seek new markets such as oversea markets, domestic markets in small cities and towns, government procurement, etc.
The rise in price influences sales volume. Total sales volume of ACs in 65 cities over the country from January to May, 2005 was increased by 5.6%, however, the sales income was increased by above 10.5%, which is mainly due to the price growth of ACs.
The AC market in big cities gradually tends to saturation. Recently, enterprises such as Gree, Midea, etc. have launched market development in towns in succession, and sped up their steps toward the international market. In addition, as the government has strengthened its macroscopic control over real estate, the AC market in some big cities in the country will also suffer its negative effect. According to the statistics of Shanghai Commercial and Industrial Association of Household AC Appliances, from January to June this year, the sales volume of ACs in Shanghai area was 580,000 units, a 7% reduction against the same period of last year.

September 6 - The Weather Favors RAC Sales - June Shipments Up 10.3%

According to data announced by the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA), domestic shipments of residential room air conditioners (RACs) in June numbered some 1,468,600 units, up a high 10.3% over the same month last year.
At first, RAC shipments were predicted to remain at usual levels.
After June, however, the nationwide average temperatures topped those in usual years causing demand to expand. Overall demand may reach a level comparable to that of last year when it exceeded 7 million units, some trade people say.
RAC shipments predicted by the industry at the beginning of April this year were around 6.8 million units. In June, however, it rained less across Japan and temperatures were high.
As a result, shipments in the April - June period showed a high 11% increase over the same period last year. The Meteorological Agency forecasts that Japan will be hit by intense heat waves from August to October.
Replacement demand levels have increased to levels which have not been seen for about 10 years from 1994 - 96 when RAC demand reached a peak. All RAC manufacturers have launched models whose energy saving performance is exceedingly higher than that of models released 10 years ago by putting their production lines to full operation. The industry assumes that RAC demand is bolstered by growing consumer awareness about the need for more electric power savings after the enactment of the Kyoto Protocol.
