June 30 - Trane Increases Investment in China
American Standard Companies decided to invest US$11 million to build a new factory in the Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone of Zhongshan of Guangdong. The factory is expected to be put into use this year.
On March 22, 2005, American Standard Companies held its global board meeting in Beijing for the first time. It has also decided to move its Asia/Pacific headquarters to Shanghai because of the excellent market development of Trane Air Conditioner, a company of American Standard Companies.
In 2004, American Standard Companies had annual revenues of approximately US$10 billion all over the world, of which US$250 million was from China.
Different from the alreadysqueezed residential air conditioner market, there is still a large market space for the commercial ACs used in supermarkets, office buildings, and hotels. According to China Household Electrical Appliances Association (CHEAA), there is a 20 billion yuan market of commercial ACs in China, and it will probably be increased to 35 to 40 billion yuan by the year 2010. In metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, the demand for commercial ACs increases 70 to 80% each year.
There are about 100 commercial AC players in China. Overseas brands include Daikin, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Carrier, York, Trane, McQuay, Electrolux, LGE, and Samsung. Domestic brands include Gree, Midea, Haier, Hisense, Shinco, and Chigo.

June 16 - 750,000 PAC Units Shipped in FY 2004
Japanese Packaged air conditioner (PAC) shipments are continuing to grow, and those in March accounted for 77,256 units, up 7.9% over the same month last year, according the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA). As a result, shipments in all months from January to March topped those in the same months last year.
PAC shipments in fiscal year 2004 topped 750,000 units, up 10% or more over the previous year, mainly reflecting the recovery in equipment investment, expansion of investment related to energy savings/environmental considerations and expansion of replacement demand.
Replacement demand which bolsters the overall market expansion, is said to occupy about 70% of total demand. Since 1996 when replacement demand exceeded demand for new units, Japanese market structure has changed into one centered round replacement demand.
Since the replacement cycle of PACs is 7 - 15 years, the potential replacement demand is estimated at about 7 million units. Since spurs are expected to be put to expansion of investment related to energy savings, the market will remain stable.
For further improvement of energy-saving features, the PAC manufacturers are endeavoring to recommend customers to adopt inverter type models. In the market, new constant-speed models are almost disappearing, and shifts to models with higher added value are proceeding rapidly.
June 14 - Danfoss Turbocor Supports EPA "Responsible Use" Vision
Joe Orosz, President of Danfoss Turbocor Compressors Inc., a HVAC compressor manufacturer located in Montreal Canada, provided opening comments at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) 2005 ClimateTech 2005 event held May 4th in Washington D.C.
"The U.S. EPA's 'Responsible Use' vision has provided invaluable direction and clarity to the design of our products," Orosz said. The EPA's "Vision" is outlined in the EPA brochure entitled, "Building Owners: Save Money, Save the Earth." It encourages manufacturers, owners, and system designers to invest in those technologies that provide the highest efficiency and lowest emissions on a sustainable basis and where performance can be documented on an on-going basis. "Responsible Use" also underscores the importance of owners investing in life-cycle cost purchases that meet sound investment criteria -- investing in technologies that are good both for business and the environment.
The EPA has promoted "Responsible Use" for nearly four years, but today's ever-increasing energy prices, coupled with the role of energy conservation in reducing dependence on foreign oil, makes the message even more vital.
This fact was underscored throughout the half-day conference, as speakers and participants explored the energy and climate conditions expected to emerge over the next twenty-five years. Rising global demand, expanding economic and industrial development, and shifting geopolitical and economic realities are all driving conditions of greater uncertainty, cost, and risk to climatic stability. Few believe regulations can contain the threats to economic health and climate security. But government can lead - both with regulations that point to attainable efficiencies and ideas that help the private sector see the opportunities of the new climate-energy marketplace.
