May 31 - Toshiba Carrier Exports Heat Pump Water Heaters to Europe

Toshiba Carrier began exporting heat pump water heaters using R410A refrigerant to heat pump water heater makers in Northern Europe. The company aims to supply several thousand units per year.
Toshiba Carrier intends to expand heat pump water heater sales as a new line of business based on their energy saving technologies (high-efficiency inverter & compressor technologies) which have been brought about through room air conditioner (RAC) and packaged air conditioner (PAC) development.
While endeavoring to expand the domestic heat pump water business, the company also aims to supply highly energy- efficient heat pump water heaters to overseas markets.
As exemplified by the fact that the company's commercial heat pump water heater "Hot Power Eco BIG" received the Energy Saving Grand Prix on the occasion of the 15th Energy Saving Grand Prix Conferment Ceremony in 2004, Toshiba Carrier's energy-saving technologies are highly rated in Japan.
In the domestic market, the ECO CUTE units - heat pump water heaters using natural refrigerant (CO2) - are treated as an object of subsidy, thus occupying a significant market share.
However, Toshiba Carrier recognizes that a refrigeration cycle technology using R410A refrigerant has already been established and is more reliable. The company therefore predicts that heat pump water heating systems using R410A will also diffuse in overseas markets thanks to their high energy-saving performance, and overseas heat pump water heater markets will show expansion comparable to the Japanese market.

May 28 - Daikin Sets up Office in Moscow

On May 1, Daikin Industries opened its "Moscow Office" as an office of Daikin Europe in Moscow City, Russia.
With the current opening of the Moscow office, Daikin intends to shift the conventional sales system mainly undertaken by sales agents to a system led by the company. Based on their own marketing activities, the company will carry out market research and thereby extend reinforced sales support to their agents and retailers. Also, by seeking new agents and retailers, the company aims to expand their AC market in Russia.
In terms of AC market size, Russia, together with Germany and Greece, belongs to the 5th largest group in Europe, following Italy, Spain, France and the UK, according to Daikin's estimation.
The Russian market is growing steadily despite the cool summer in 2003 and 2004. Its residential RAC market, in particular, has become the 4th largest one in Europe due to the fact that Russia has a hot summer comparable to that in Japan.
Therefore, it is expected to grow sizably from now on.
The Russian market of commercial ACs (VRV) in which Daikin has a strong foothold is also predicted to expand sizably, since hotels, offices, stores and other commercial facilities are increasing rapidly in big cities, and big urban development projects are also underway.
The Russian AC market in 2004 was at \42 billion, having nearly doubled from 2000, and is predicted to expand to some \60 billion or more in 2007.
Daikin's sales in the air conditioning business is estimated to reach about \3.6 billion in 2004. While the company is enjoying a favorable increase in sales of commercial ACs (VRV) , it is subordinate to the Korean manufacturers in those of residential RACs whose market is large. So, with the opening of the Moscow office as an opportunity, the company will reinforce sales supporting activities for their agents and retailers, and thereby aim at attaining about \8 billion of sales in 2007 by developing business operations.

There are about 100 commercial AC players in China. Overseas brands include Daikin, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Carrier, York, Trane, McQuay, Electrolux, LGE, and Samsung. Domestic brands include Gree, Midea, Haier, Hisense, Shinco, and Chigo.

May 18 - York Receives EPA 2005 Climate Protection Award

York International Corporation is among a select group of organizations and the only HVACR company to receive a 2005 Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). York was recognized in an award presentation May 4 in Washington, DC, for its pioneering work and ongoing development of energy-saving technologies applied to chillers. York technology reduces chiller energy consumption typically by 15-25% annually.
According to UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), it is widely recognized that the indirect effect of electricity consumption is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from chillers. Average annual energy savings of 20% mean a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, resulting in substantial climate protection.
With its annual Climate Protection Awards, EPA "honors the extraordinary accomplishments of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to protecting the environment," according to the agency's Web site. "In 1998, EPA established the Climate Protection Awards to recognize exceptional leadership, personal dedication, and technical achievements in protecting the Earth's climate."

May 12 - Korean GHP Sales Increase: 6,000 Units Forecasted

This year, the Korean GHP (gas engine driven heat pump) market is estimated to reach some 6,000 units.
According to the industry, despite the economic slump in general, the GHP market is expected to expand sizably from some 4,500 units last year to 6,000 units this year. This is mainly attributable to the announcement made recently by NASA that this summer will have the most intense heat waves in 100 years of observation history due to the increasing greenhouse effect coupled with the el nino phenomenon.
While all makers in the GHP industry welcome NASA's forecast, they are making all-out effort to secure their share in the AC market by taking strategical steps to survive severe competition.
Following Samsung Electronics which already started domestic production of GHP indoor units, LGE is also said to be planning to launch domestic production of main components such as engines and controls. Thus, the Korean GHP market is expected to turn in a new direction.
In view of the current domestic mar- ket size (about 6,000 units), fully domestic production of GHPs is said to be unprofitable according to some analysts.
However, to survive in the world market, it is recognized to be an important step to secure more competitive power.
In the Korean GHP market, four Japanese makers, Aisin, Sanyo, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Yanmar, participate by choosing several Korean agents, occupying the vast majority of the market share.
It is said that, to survive this competition, these Japanese players have drastically reduced their prices compared to those at the time when they started operations.

May 8 - MHI Releases GHP Systems with Industry's Top COP

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) released in April the "ECO7 Series" of high-efficiency gas heat pump air conditioners (GHPs) having attained the industry's highest COP of 1.59. The new series has realized a sizable 23% improvement in efficiency compared to the predecessor series by adopting a next generation type high-efficiency scroll compressor for GHPs developed jointly with three major city gas companies - Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas and Toho Gas.
MHI has also added the industry's first replacement model using R410A and large capacity 24 hp type to the lineup to meet a wide range of demand for commercial uses such as large stores, schools, hospitals, and mid-/small-size office buildings.
The ECO7 is a fully remodeled successor series to the ECO6, featuring higher efficiency realized by using a scroll type compressor instead of a reciprocating type. It consists of 6 types from 7 hp (22.4 kW) to 24 hp (67.0 kW). It has been developed by giving environmental considerations to issues such as the adoption of the new refrigerant R410A whose ozone depleting potential is zero (0).
Efficiency in the rated cooling mode has been improved by 20% thanks to the adoption of two high-efficiency scroll compressors developed jointly with the three major gas companies. The new series has also realized higher reliability by closely responding to cooling/heating load with sophisticated capacity control and the introduction of a rotational starting system. The engine efficiency has also been improved by adopting newly developed pistons and a heat exchanger, while the heat exchanger efficiency has also been improved by 60% compared to the predecessor series due to the adoption of a 4-sided heat exchanger structure.
