April 26 - Danfoss and Hydro Cooperate on Car AC Components

Two of Southern Denmark's largest industrial companies, Danfoss A/S and Hydro Alunova - a subsidiary of Hydro Aluminium - have joined forces in a joint venture to develop components for air-conditioning systems in cars.
Within the next two to three years, a new joint venture between Danfoss and Hydro is expected to lead to the development of a range of flexible aluminium tube components for air-conditioning systems in cars. Today, air-conditioning systems in cars use the HFC refrigerant R134a, which will be replaced by the environmentally-friendly CO2 during the next few years. However, higher pressure is required when using CO2 and, consequently, a replacement will be developed for the rubber hoses used today. The flexible aluminium hoses, which are being developed in the new joint venture, will tolerate the four times' higher pressure required by CO2. Commenting on the new joint venture, Jorgen M. Clausen, President of Danfoss, said: "We are very glad to be entering into the cooperation, which is on course to develop a fascinating product. It has every chance of being successful with the new EU law stating that CO2 should be used in air-conditioning systems." He points out that the two companies joining forces to create the pioneering product range are from the southern part of Denmark, and each have their own know-how and expertise.
Hydro Aluminium is a market leader in the production of aluminium tubes for heat exchangers in cars. Hydro approached Danfoss to arrange an agreement on the exchange of components:
"We are very pleased to get the chance to cooperate with a major local company. Danfoss has the competencies we need to continue with our idea. Together, we can make this a business of the future," said Jan-Arne Ronningen, Senior Vice President, Hydro Aluminium Precision Tubing.

April 24 - Daikin Europe Offers VRVII Water-Cooled Version

Daikin Europe NV has extended the operational scope of its acclaimed VRVII inverter driven dx air conditioning system with a new water-cooled version.
The new system is designed for use in new build commercial projects where no roof or external space is available for outdoor condensing units or where stringent noise restrictions apply. It can also however, be fitted to an existing chilled water/cooling tower circuit during refurbishment operations. Also, the system layout allows operation independent of the ambient condition. The tailor made engineering of the water side combined with flexible VRV technology enables high tech customised and highly efficient solutions to be realised.
Cooling is achieved by means of a plate heat exchanger, located within the condensing unit casing and supplied with water at temperatures between 10°C and 45°C from a cooling tower/dry cooler and if necessary, a boiler.
Available in 10, 20 and 30HP models, the water cooled VRV-WII operates on R410A refrigerant and will be available in both heat pump and heat recovery versions. The condensing unit is remarkably compact at 1000 x 780 x 550mm, lightweight (150kg) and can be installed in space saving 'double decker' fashion in a plant room. April 12 - New Sino-Japanese J. V. Storms Chinese Market

Headed by Hitachi and Panasonic, transnational Japanese corporations are beginning their new advertising campaign in China, indicating the emerging of a new stage in the Sino-Japanese joint venture.
"The new stage of the Sino-Japanese joint venture aims at the home appliance market in China as well as setting up manufacturing bases," Said Cai Linhai, a special researcher of the Transnational Corporation Research Center of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, in defining the new stage of of the Sino-Japanese joint venture.
According to the data from the Ministry of Commerce, Japanese companies sped up the construction of their manufacturing bases in China over the last 3 years.
Mitsubishi has set up 41 new factories in China, while Hitachi and Toshiba invested in 37 and 20 companies in China respectively. Cai Linhai considered that Japanese companies hope to increase their market share in China in the new Sino-Japanese joint venture, therefore, more sales cooperation with Chinese companies are expected in the future.

April 10 - Climatizacion 2005, Spanish HVACR Expo

Climatizacion 2005 was held under the sponsorship of the IFEMA for four days from February 23 to 26 at the Feria de Madrid. This international air-conditioning, heating, ventilation and refrigeration expo has been held biennially in Madrid.
JARN has been participating in the event observing the trends of products from various exhibitors. Participated in by more exhibitors than two years ago, this year's expo took to a higher level.
Exhibitors participated from about 40 countries including local makers and distributors, thus making the current expo an event even more strongly international in character than before.
The expo was held in the spacious 54,697 m2 show site. Although the number of visitors on the first day was relatively small due to the heavy snowfall during the previous night, the show site was filled with visitors from the second day. There were more visitors than two years ago.
Because of intensifying competition year after year in the international refrigeration and air conditioning market, all makers seem to have been urged to do their best to arouse the interest of many visitors.
Environmentally friendly products in particular were seen at many booths. These makers seem to be positively pursuing features with added value such as the adoption of new refrigerants and air purification.
There were a variety of products exhibited by major Japanese, Korean and Chinese makers. This may be due to the fact that Europe as a whole has grown into a huge AC market exceeding 4 million units/year, and Asian makers are desperate in selling as many air conditioners as possible to clear carried-over stocks and to keep their factories at proper operation.

April 8 - Leading AC Makers Follow the Trend of Energy Savings

China is currently having a hard time with its energy resources. About 2/3 of the cities have experienced the pains of power shortage since 2003. Accordingly, a new compulsory energy efficiency standard will be officially put into use on Mar. 1, 2005 to restrict the high energyconsuming products from entering the market. The standard is highly beneficial to the government, the AC industry, and the customers in helping the government to relieve the power shortage, the AC industry to force unqualified brands out of the market, and the customers to select the best product. China has also formed its own energy-efficient AC manufacturing system, which keeps pace with the world.
Gree has got both the top authentication in Brazil, the "Class A Energy Efficiency Label Identification," and the "energy star" cup for the great effort it put into the "Power Saving Project" pushed by the Brazilian government. In November 2004, Gree got its identification and cup in Rio de Janeiro in a ceremony held by the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Brazil, the Brazil Electricity Authority, and the Brazil Energy Efficient Committee.
Midea, together with Gome, Suning, Dazhong, Yongle, and Chongqing Gen- eral Trading Group, sponsored a series of events that focused on AC energy efficiency. From general managers, senior management, and experts to sales people and technicians, employees from all levels of Midea went to the market to have a face-to-face talk with the customers regarding energy efficiency. Midea also launched its V series energy-efficient AC at an excellent quality/price ratio in September 2004, providing the user a cheaper but more capable product.
Haier, another AC giant, released a high efficiency oxygen bar air conditioner which received 3 energy stars from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), USA, Eurovent, Europe, and the China Energy Conservation Association.
Hence, Haier became the first company in the world to receive all 3 stars .
However, some experts pointed out that there were still some limitations to the new standard. For example, there are no regulations on how to punish the companies or products which violate the standards, and there are also no regulations on how to promote a mandatory energy efficient air conditioner.
Therefore, there is still a long way to go to produce a good environment for the manufacturing and selling of energy efficient Acs.

April 6 - US Legislation Would Spur Replacement of CFC Chillers

ARI to Support "Cool and Efficient Buildings Act"
The U. S. Congressman Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), an active member of the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus, has re-introduced H.R. 1241, the "Cool and Efficient Buildings Act," to set the depreciation period from 39 to 20 years for "any property which is part of a heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or commercial refrigeration system and which is installed on or in a building which is non residential real property."
The legislation would provide an incentive for the replacement of the more than 36,000 chillers still in use in 2004 that use chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants.
"This represents 45 percent of the original 80,000 CFC chillers banned from production in the United States," said Hoekstra. "Improved new chiller units are 40 percent more efficient than those installed 20 years ago, are virtually leak-free, reducing loss of refrigerant and improving the protection to human health and the environment."
"ARI strongly urges its members to support the Cool and Efficient Buildings Act," said William G. Sutton, president of the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute. "A depreciation schedule that reflects the useful life of chillers and other equipment will save money, reduce energy consumption and encourage investment in more efficient models." A wide range of non-residential buildings would qualify for the new depreciation rate including offices, malls, airports and factories where HVACR equipment, from large tonnage liquid chillers to unitary air conditioners and heat pumps, plays a key role in increased productivity and makes possible use of heat sensitive computers and telecommunications gear.
According the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), installing more efficient chillers could reduce energy consumption by 7 billion kilowatt hours per year, saving $480 million annually and avoiding emissions of 4 million tons of carbon dioxide.

April 4 - Panasonic Introduces Its 1st DVD Car Navigation In China

Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is known, has launched its first car navigation system into the Chinese market. In the midst of fast-paced economic growth in China, the number of car owners is increasing along with interest in sophisticated in-car electronic equipment including car navigation systems. Featuring the first "bilingual" voice guidance in the industry, the Strada CN-D100H is suitable to car owners across China. With this new car navigation system, Panasonic aims to attract car owners far and wide in China.
The CN-D100H supports Mandarin and Cantonese, the two most common Chinese dialects. Cantonese is spoken in Guangdong and neighboring provinces. Guangdong Province, a manufacturing center of the country, has been experiencing rapid economic growth led by such key cities as Shenzhen. The city, located at the border of Hong Kong, is one of the first regions to benefit from economic freedoms. With many affluent car owners, demand for car navigation systems is expected to grow in the province.
The CN-D100H comes with a DVD containing a vast amount of search data and road maps. The disc holds route maps of four municipalities under the direct control of the central government, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing, and 16 provinces. It also stores 142,000 points of interest including restaurants, hotels, and public places and 31,000 address data. When connecting with Panasonic's in-dash monitor via RGB cord, maps can be displayed more vividly in detail.

April 2 - Carrier Reintroduces 17DA Centrifugal Chiller

In response to customer demand, Carrier Corporation, USA, recently announced the reintroduction of the 17DA large capacity industrial water chiller. The product has been the mainstay of central chilled water plant design since its original introduction in the mid-1960's.
The 17DA open-type centrifugal chiller, with a capacity performance in the nominal 3000-, 4000- and 5000-ton range uses environmentally sound HFC 134a refrigerant. A steam turbine, electric motor or gas engine drive can be selected to match the most economical fuel available. Dual drive steam turbine and electric motors have been applied to the 17DA, giving the owner-operator maximum flexibility.
After a 6-year absence and in response to the market demand for a reliable chiller for industrial central plant applications, Carrier began manufacturing the 17DA again. "Customers have asked Carrier to re-release this Carrier classic 17DA model," said Harold D. Valencia, product sales and marketing manager. "They recognize the benefits of its engineering excellence and timeless design, including an optimal life cycle cost based on excellent energy performance, ease of maintenance and flexibility in application."
Manufactured at the Carrier National Repair Center in Houston, the 17DA chiller is available now.
