March 31 - INEOS Fluor Highlights Refrigerants at Italian Expo
INEOS Fluor was highlighting its range of refrigerants at this year's Expocomfort Exhibition (Mostra Convegno Expocomfort) in Milan. The company was at the show in partnership with its Italian distributor, Tazzetti & Co.
INEOS Fluor, the world's leading manufacturer of HFC 134a, has announced that it intends to meet increased demand for alternatives to HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), with a significant phased investment in its refrigerant production facilities.
The company, which manufactures HFCs in the UK, US and Japan, plans to convert its Runcorn plant to the exclusive production of KLEA (HFC)125 by April 2005. This will be the first phase of the investment.
KLEA 125 is an important component in the production of refrigerants R407C and R410A, which provide a long-term alternative to HCFC 22 for air-conditioning applications. This investment, combined with INEOS Fluor's 134a capacity puts the company in a strong position to meet the expected demand for HCFC 22 replacements in Europe and other world markets.
"We continue to see steady demand as end-users seek to replace HCFCs regulated under EU legislation," said Tony Kaye, INEOS Fluor's European Commercial Director. "Whilst modern air-conditioning systems have lower leakage, charge sizes are smaller and recovery and recycling is commonplace, we see a steady growth in demand for efficient non-flammable refrigerants.
Our investment in KLEA 125 is well timed to coincide with this requirement." To ensure global capacity for KLEA 134a is maintained, INEOS Fluor plans to increase the capacity of its plants in St Gabriel, Louisiana and Mihara, Japan, in line with market demand, forming the second phase of the investment.
INEOS Fluor has production facilities in the USA, UK and Japan and a global network of distributors and agents.
March 29 - RefComp Exhibits New Products at Mostra Convegno Expo
RefComp, a leading compressor manufacturer based in Italy, faces the important Milan exhibition with remarkable novelties, always up to date in the research of technologically-advanced solutions for the customers' requests.
During the show the completely new range of compact screw compressors of 100 and 120 hp was displayed, with important features such as the new position of the capacity control side valve and the possibility of using the economizer also at part load operations (50 and 75%). The new models are characterized by the adoption of a new integrated oil separator (demister) which allowed the reduction of its dimensions; hence the reduction not only of the overall dimensions of the 'bell' but also of the weight of the compressor. These new models are perfectly interchangeable with the previous version, maintaining the same positions and quotas as concerning the valves and feet.
In addition, a complete range of screw compressors with integrated oil separator optimized for R134a was also introduced at the show: a complete series from 40 to 200 hp designed to take the maximum advanced of this refrigerant.
Besides, RefComp has created a wholly new series of compact screw compressors of small capacities, with a simplified constructive structure implying a reduction in terms of dimensions, weight and costs; a new oil separator has been developed, with a better efficiency than the 'classical' bell type oil separators, but with a remarkable decrease in overall dimensions.
March 28 - Mostra Convegno Expocomfort, Italian Show
The 34th Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE), the international biennial show for heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing technology, water treatment and bathrooms, was held from March 2nd to 6th, 2004 at Fiera Milano, Italy. The show was comprehensive and covered extensive products in the categories aforementioned.
Among all those related to HVAC&R, what especially drew attention was the following three points (1) the increase in participation of Chinese companies as expected, (2) a number of RAC/PACs and VRFs using HFC refrigerant (R410A) displayed by exhibitors under OEM brands as well as their own private brands.
More than 50 Chinese exhibitors in various fields participated in MCE.
As for refrigerant for air conditioners, R22 was phased out and has been shifted to either R407C or R410A. As expected, most system manufacturers displayed products using R410A rather than R407C with a view to showing off their engineering level, although the selling prices of the R410A models are higher than those of R407C models in the market. They say that, in the near future, models using R410A will become the mainstream in the markets. Even the R410A models with DC driven inverter were seen here and there. Needless to mention, those units were displayed at the stands of the Japanese majors like Daikin, Fujitsu General, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric. (Melco), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp and Toshiba. Aermec, Airwell and Electra also have a R410A models with DC inverter in their residential air conditioner lineup and are ready to compete among flagship models, higher tier models, where they forecast competition will be made just among the Japanese, Koreans and some competent players from China.
Examples of remarkable collaboration between system makers and compressor makers are Matsushita & McQuay and Turbocor & Axima refrigeration. The product developed by the former team (Matsushita & McQuay) is " Minichiller T" which is the new line of air cooled chillers by McQuay, equipped with Matsushita R410A rotary compressors in tandem configuration. Due to the advanced engineering and high techniques required for the oil management, the adoption of tandem rotary compressors with R410A for chiller application is the first in the world, according to both companies. Axima has developed chillers mounting Turbocor's six of 60-ton compressors. In addition, the chillers mounting Turbocor's compressors were also seen at the booths of Cilmaveneta, Electra and RC Group. In the future, Turbocor compressors may threaten the relevant screw and reciprocating compressors. of other nations.
March 26 - "2003 Copeland Cup Central AC Application Cases" Competition in China
The 2003 China Central Air-conditioning Applications & Technologies technical conference, organized by the China Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Association (CRAA), was successfully held in Shanghai in December 2003.
During this event, Emerson Climate Technologies sponsored the "Copeland Cup" and presented the awards to the prize winners. The award is based on selecting some of the best commercial and residential designs for central AC, and is aimed at encouraging the development of the central AC market in China. The competition received an overwhelming response, with applications from all the major OEMs of central AC.
On December 10, 2003, Mark Dunson, Vice President - Marketing, Copeland Asia Pacific, attended the "Copeland Cup" award ceremony to present the trophies to the 1st prize winners.
At the award ceremony, Mr.Dunson remarked, "We hope that the establishment of this award will encourage the participation and generation of more interest about central AC from OEMs, real estate developers, design institutes, architects, consultants and the end users.
This is an excellent forum for exchanging ideas and technical information and we are delighted to share our technology and experiences with industry professionals and interested people." Commenting on the need of a central AC technology in China, Mr. Dunson said - "The rapid pace of economic development in China has resulted in an increasing demand for energy, but the supply of electricity has not kept up with the demand, resulting in power shortages in the country. Additional power plants increase the release of effluents to the atmosphere and add to the global concern of environmental protection. Air-conditioning systems consume over 30% of electricity and so it is imperative to encourage the adoption of energy efficient technologies and the setting up of minimum energy standards. A good central air-conditioning system can reduce energy needs by as much as 30% and China needs a central air-conditioning technology that is modern, energy efficient, easy to apply, and also environmentally friendly. In addition, China is also witnessing a rapid growth in the building construction industry - both residential and commercial. Aesthetically superior buildings, that put Chinese cities on the global map, need modern technologies.
China must shift from the multiple dis- crete air-conditioning systems that spoil the building exterior to central air-conditioning, a more elegant solution for both residential and commercial buildings".
Mr. Dunson highlighted the initiatives being made by Emerson Climate Technologies to satisfy all the needs of the Chinese air-conditioning and construction industry. Through the introduction of the Copeland Digital Scroll technology, OEMs are now able to design superior performing central AC systems.
The Copeland Digital Scroll technology has many benefits - excellent energy efficiency that results in lower operating costs, ease in application, superior reliability and environmentally friendliness.
As the next generation in central AC technology, it is winning awards globally for its innovativeness. Besides the technology of central air-conditioning, the quality of installation is a key element in optimal system performance. Emerson Climate Technologies has started an industry certification program for all installers of central AC systems, which are powered by the Copeland Digital Scroll.
This training program, that is rapidly gaining popularity, is set to become the industry standard for the best installation practice.

March 20 - Kerosene Fuel Cell Race: Nippon Oil and Idemitsu Start Testing
Oil companies have launched field tests on reformed kerosene fuel cells aimed at commercialization in 2006.
Nippon Oil Corporation starts demonstrative operation of reforming unit with 8.5 kW output introducing polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) stack developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) by installing it at a convenience store in front of JR Osaki Station in Tokyo.
Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. also developed 5 kW unit introducing FC stack developed by Ishikawajima- Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) and installed it at the company's employee dormitory in Hokkaido.
Field tests on FC using kerosene which is difficult to reform but cheapest start a year later than liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reforming.
Since kerosene distribution network is well established throughout the country and more than 25% cheaper than city gas or LPG, the oil industry considers that it will become the primary fuel of future FCs.
The largest hurdles are desulfurization and hydrogen reforming. Jointly with MHI which supplied FC stack, Nippon Oil completed 8.5 kW unit, starting demonstration with field tests carried out by New Energy Foundation.
This stack has realized more than 70% reforming efficiency for extraction of hydrogen from refined kerosene which was desulfurized to 50 ppb (one 1,000 millionth). It has attained the average power generating efficiency of 31% by 500-hour operation matching the FC stack system. The target efficiency is 36% as in the case of LPG.
Idemitsu, jointly with IHI, will start demonstrative operation of kerosene reforming unit which is comparable to Nippon Oil's unit in power generating efficiency.
The kerosene fuel cell is expected to be commercialized in 2006, or a year later than home-use FC with reformed LPG.
March 18 - AHR Expo 2004 Set New West Coast Record
Thanks to the signs of economic recovery, good preparations made by the organizers and ideal location, 56th AHR Exposition broke the previous all-time attendance record for a West Coast event with 1,652 exhibitors including 216 international exhibiting companies from 33 countries and 323,000 square feet of exhibition space. With a total registered attendance of more than 37,000 HVAC&R professionals (21,000 visitors and 16,000 exhibitor personnel), 2004 International Air Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) was held from January 26-28 at Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California U.S.A.
Concurrently, 2004 AHR Expo Innovation Award Ceremony took place at the show. The most innovative products among the thousands on display have been selected as winners in eight categories. The honorable winners included Danfoss for its CO2 compressors, ebm Industries, Rheem and York UPG and others. The duration of three days was too short to appreciate all of the state-of-the-art products and to attend academic as well as informative seminars. From the aspect of exhibitors, in spite of the absence of such gigantic players as Carrier, Trane and McQuay, the show had the significant meaning due to the participation of several local and foreign enterprises in various fields of HVAC&R business.
As for air conditioning equipment exhibited, either big industrial and commercial chillers were seldom seen.
Instead, residential and light commercial splits and mini splits were exhibited here and there by participants from Japanese, Korean and Chinese manufacturers.
Among them, Fujitsu General, Sanyo and Panasonic had spacious booths where they displayed various products.
Fujitsu General exhibited the VRF units, DC driven inverter with R410A to be launched in the US market in the first quarter of 2005. Also highlighted at the booth was IAQ model featuring washable plasma filter to be available in the market in March 2004.
At Sanyo's booth, new ductless split AC with R410A achieving 13 EER, super quiet PTAC and 6hp "ECO Multi", VRF were exhibited. In addition, what attracted the visitors the most were CO2 compressors.
March 16 - ARI Statement on U.S. Federal Appeals Court Decision
The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) expressed disappointment at a decision by the U.S. Appeals Court for the Second Circuit in New York which found that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) did not follow proper procedures when it adopted a 20 percent increase in the minimum efficiency of central air conditioners.
"We are disappointed that such an important decision affecting homeowners in all 50 states should be determined on process rather than on the impact of the regulation on millions of people. We will take some time to review the court's decision with counsel and then make a decision on what options best serve consumers and energy conservation," said ARI President William G. Sutton.
"Our options include requesting further review of the Second Circuit's decision and pursuing our challenge of the 13 SEER rule before the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Unlike the Second Circuit's decision, which was based on procedural grounds, the Fourth Circuit would be reviewing DOE regulations to determine whether the standard was economically justified for consumers and manufacturers." SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a measurement of air conditioner efficiency. Under current DOE regulations, manufacturers of residential sized central air conditioners cannot produce units below 10 SEER.
Following extensive hearings, DOE in May of 2002 published a 12 SEER standard for all central air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured after Jan. 26, 2006. However, the Natural Resources Defense Council and others filed a suit against the DOE action, claiming that DOE had not followed proper procedures in the adoption of a 12 SEER rule.
In its decision, the New York appeals court said "the May 23, 2002 replacement standards [12 SEER rule] were promulgated in violation of that section [42 U.S.C. 6295(o)(1)] because DOE failed to effect a valid amendment of the original standards' [13 SEER] effective date, and as a consequence was thereafter prohibited from amending those standards downward."
March 14 - Galanz to Expand AC Production
Galanz announced in October that they would construct the "world's largest AC production base" by purchasing 2 km2 land in the suburbs of Zhongshan City, thus causing a sensation in the AC industry. On December 19, by inviting VIPs of the municipal government and reporters from Chinese media, the company held a ground-breaking ceremony of Zhongshan factory. Mr. Liang Zhaoxian, CEO of Galanz Group, attended the ceremony.
Having started its business as a microwave oven specialist, Galanz has now become a synonym for a world factory of household appliances (refer to page 46, Sep. 2003 issue of JARN).
While introducing production lines and latest technologies at low costs, the company is also positively recruiting the talented from abroad. Thus, Galanz has realized the high quality manufacturing system by organizing a strict quality control system. In the meantime, they are exporting those products very quickly by linking directly with overseas first-class home appliance sales chains such as Carrefour, Whirlpool, and K-Mart. According to China's custom-clearance statistics, the number of ACs exported by Galanz in RY 2003 topped 400,000 units. This is regarded to be the first step taken by Galanz ACs into the world arena.
It has become clear that Galanz is strategically applying the successful decreases of microwave oven prices by mass production also to AC business.
At Zhongshan Factory in which investment was made to expand the production capacity, the production lines will be gradually put into operation from 2004 with the yearly total RAC production of about 10 million units. When the production capacity of existing lines is added, overall production capacity will become some 12 million units, according to the corporate media.

March 9 - China Studying Legislation of Home Appliances Recycling
A major Japanese newspaper reports that China is now working out the legislation of "Home Appliances Recycling Law" to accelerate the recycling of used home appliances. The government intends to make it obligatory for makers to recycle their products at their own cost.
When this legislation is implemented, Japanese electric appliance makers shifting their production facilities to China will have to incur higher cost.
The legislation is undertaken mainly by the National Development and Reform Committee by referring to similar laws in Japan, USA and Europe. Products subjected to the law are TVs, refrigerators, ACs, washing machines and personal computers (PCs) sold in China.
The Committee is boiling down on (1)whether or not include the business use of those products other than personal, (2)how to form an organization which actually takes charge of recycling.
It is highly probable that the Committee make it obligatory for makers to bear the recycling cost. This is similar to EU system - not to Japanese system in which the cost is directly levied from consumers.
China is the world's largest home appliances consuming country with huge amount of waste products. It is predicted that 5 million TVs, 4 million refrigerators and 6 million washing machines are discarded annually.
March 7 - Sanyo Technology to Integrate Networked Home Appliances
Sanyo Electric announced recently that they have developed a new technology to integrate networked home appliances which can be operated from a mobile phone or via Internet. Named "DarWIN*", it has made it possible to integrally control refrigerator, washing machine, AV (audiovisual) equipment, and also information appliances such as that for crime-prevention. Previously, it was difficult to integrally control them, because they had different communication protocols. The new technology has made integrated control while leaving the different protocols intact.
* DarWIN: Dual Agents for Residence and Well-being on Integrated Network Since "DarWIN" allows controller functions to be updated by means of new software downloaded from the Internet, it can easily respond to addition or renewal/ replacement of networked home appliances. The company plans to release "IT home" utilizing this technology by the end of this year.
"DarWIN" is mounted on home-use server and touch-panel type controller. It can comply with protocols of various communication systems such as "ECHONET" for home appliances and "Universal Plug and Play" for AV equipment.
The room arrangement of each user's home is displayed on the touch panel so that, according to the display, the user can turn on or off each home appliance of each room. By checking data such as refrigerator opening frequency per day, it becomes possible to watch the elderly living alone, according to the company.
Also, by means of a voice recognizer, it is possible to talk with a visitor by changing the voice to feminine or masculine voice.
When choosing the outing mode, the window locking condition is displayed, and if there is an invader, he/she is detected by a human body sensor, making an alarm sound. It is also possible to photograph the invader by an outside camera and send warning to the user's mobile phone.
March 3 - Steam-Turbine-Drive Chiller From York
YORK International introduces its new MaxE? YST steam-turbine-drive chiller, available in capacities from 700 to 2,000 ton (2000 to 7000 kW). It uses the steam turbine's variable-speed capability to optimize chiller speed and maximize operating efficiency. Unlike traditional steam-turbine chillers, its steam condenser is mounted on top of the chiller. It is also the first steam-turbine-drive chiller with a single, dedicated control system that controls the entire chiller.
- Efficient Performance - Variable-speed-drive capability means efficient performance at both design and off-design conditions.
- Ease of Operation - The OptiViewTM Control Center ensures easy operation and optimum performance. It offers an industry first: fully automatic starting of the chiller.
- Open Communications - The OptiViewTM Control Center can communicate with most building- and process-management systems.
- Floorspace Savings - The steam condenser is top-mounted, so floorspace is no larger than an electric chiller.
March 2 - Japanese New-Model RACs for 2004 Market
It is generally expected that 2004 will become the year for recovery of Japan's room air conditioner (RAC) market.
With some wishful prediction that it is less likely for Japan to have cool summer for three years in a row, RAC sales in 2004 are expected to grow favorably.
Stressing Added Values New-model RACs with all kinds of functions ranging from comfort to health care, to energy savings, to environmental considerations are being launched.
All RAC makers have endeavored to improve functions related to the air quality in view of the tendency for more users interested in better air quality that ensures comfort and health care.
The notable air quality technologies for RACs in 2004 are "oxygen supply" and "ventilating" functions. Some models are capable of ventilating air as specified in the Revised Building Standards Law. Thus, for 2004 sales strategy, much stress is laid upon the functions for better air quality.
The domestic market in 2004 is predicted by the industry to reach 6.7 ~ 6.8 million units, remaining the same level with or a little above that in 2003.
The key to the new AC sales promotion for 2004 is depending on how end users can understand the air quality functions that manufacturers have built up.
Product Trends It has become obvious that increasing emphasis is laid upon the improved air quality in the product strategy for new-model RACs for 2004.
Improved air quality as new product concept Many makers have already announceed new models so that the product concept in the industry as a whole has become almost clear. The product strategy for offering new models as a generalpurpose air conditioner has been reinforced and models capable of year-round service have increased. Thus, the sharegetting race will intensify further between the models adopting air quality technologies.
The new models can be proposed as an all-weather serviceable unit capable of being used year round with improved functions ensuring more comfort and better air quality.
Creation of comfort The number of makers adopting "oxygen supply" and "ventilating " functions in their new models has increased notably, thus presenting the product concept for creating the comfortable indoor air environment year round and making the products even more attractive to consumers.
Responding to the increasing number of highly airtight residences, the indoor air quality is being subjected to severer regulations as exemplified by the revision of Building Standards Law. Thus, there seems to be much room for RACs with improved functions to be accepted.
For example, removal of harmful gases such as CO which cannot be eliminated by a filter will be accepted by users.
The number of makers adopting the "oxygen supply" function to compensate for a drop in indoor oxygen concentration has also increased. The product strategy with special considerations for air quality is being adopted, including a function for increasing the oxygen concentration by introducing outdoor air made fresher through a filter.
March 1 - Daikin's New RACs Slim Down by 40%
Daikin Industries released from January UX and R series of new RACs for 2004 featuring greatly improved basic performance and harmony with the interior by adopting new technologies and materials.
UX series, among others, has slimmed down by about 40% without affecting the energy saving performance by compactly designing each component and optimizing the layout of fan, heat exchanger, etc. by having them meet the strict dimensional precision requirements.
As a result, the depth has been reduced from conventional 23 ~ 25 cm to 15 cm.
R series has realized ideal space heating in winter by an effective combination of air conditioner and humidifier. Since the humidifying capacity increases according to size, even in the wide living room moist air can be distributed to every corner. The hourly humidifying capacity is 450 ml for 2.2 kW/2.5 kW types, 500 ml for 2.8 kW/3.6 kW types, and 600 ml for 4.0 ~ 6.3 kW types.
R series also mixes vitamin constituents friendly to the skin into the intake air filter so that these constituents are spread together with moisture for humidification.
The entire room is filled with air which has become more friendly to the skin thanks to the multiplying effect of humidification.
Further, dehumidification in winter has been realized by ventilation of intake air for the first time in the industry, making dehumidification possible even when outside temperature is below 0°C. For example, on a cold day in winter, even when humidity is raised by cooking during humidifying operation, dry open air is automatically introduced to adjust the room humidity to a comfortable level.
Moreover, since the air intake power has been increased by about 20% (compared to the existing R series), the room air is powerfully ventilated by 24 m3/h of large capacity.
The common feature of both UX and R series is adoption of new material which has combined the adsorbing power of photocatalyst titanium apatite and decomposing/regenerating power of photocatalyst for the first time in the world. The adsorbing power has more than doubled (compared to the existing R series). Both series adopt beautiful crystal panel on the front side, having realized more stylish harmony with the interior by the qualitative finish giving a high-grade image.
