November 29 - Daikin Air Purifier Features Photocatalytic Filters
Daikin Industries has recently released 2 new models of air purifier capable to quickly degerm by means of triple-layered photocatalytic filters and powerful dust collecting power with higher air flow rate.
Daikin Air Purifiers with Photocatalytic Filters The new products are: MC655-W for a room size up to 41 m2 and MC755-W for a room size up to 48 m2.
The new models adopt nanotechnology to degerm with photocatalyst titanium apatite filter which is being commercialized for the first time in the world. It absorbs 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, toxins, etc. (2.5 times absorbency compared with former filter), This effect was demonstrated by a public inspection institution.
Also, the pre-filter incorporates photocatalyst catechin for the first time in the industry. It has been demonstrated that more than 99% of bacteria was removed even by the light of fluorescent lamp 2.5 times absorbency compared with former filter; test on prefilter performance being held by Japan Food Analysis Center). By the new photocatalytic filter, bacteria/viruses were decomposed efficiently.
The MC755-W has attained 7.5 m3/ min of max. air flow rate (compared to 7.0 m3/min), thus catching dust particles and bacteria from every corner of room.
For example, in the case of about 13 m2 room, it can remove 90% of airborne mold in about 15 minutes, and 99.99% in about 20 minutes.
November 28 - Matsushita Air Purifiers Catch & Inactivate Allergen
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. developed 3 models of air purifiers "Air- Rich" which had "Aller-buster" capable of inactivating 99% of allergen incorporated into the filter for the first time in the world.
Conventional air purifiers have exhibited enough performance in catching Matsushita's 3 New Air Purifiers such types of allergen as pollen and ticks' excreta which can cause allergy. However, when servicing the filters, they have tended to redischarge the caught allergen from the filters. Since the new air purifiers can not merely catch but also inactivate allergen, they are safer for the users.
The main features of new products are as follows: By adding the green tea catechin, which was adopted in 1995 as an antiviral measure, about 6 times as much as that added to the predecessor's filter, the virus catching/inactivating power has been improved greatly.

November 20 - GHP ACs Make Debut in Beijing
Recently, gas driven heat pump (GHP) ACs have appeared for the first time in Beijing market.
Using natural gas as its fuel, GHPs can be applied to facilities such as office buildings, small stores, hospitals and factories.
Thanks to increases in gas ACs, the summer power peak in Beijing City is expected to be alleviated considerably.
According to an explanation by Mr. Li Yalan, chief engineer of Beijing Gas Company, GHP's running cost is more than 50% lower than that of conventional electric AC. As a result of measurement of GHP installed in a model room in Beijing City, its running cost during cooling operation was only 13 yuan/m2, compared to 24 ~ 26 yuan/m2 in the case of electric power. GHP's yearly total running cost covering both heating and cooling was only 28 yuan/m2, compared to 57 yuan in the case of electric power.
However, the initial investment in GHP is 500 ~ 700 yuan/m2, higher by 40% than that in conventional electric central AC system.
November 19 - Gas AC Market Beginning to Grow in china

November 16 - EU sanctions may hurt York Int'l
A World Trade Organization panel decided that the tariffs imposed last year by the Bush administration on imported steel were illegal.
York International expects to record about $30 million in expenses for 2003 for higher steel costs.
The increased costs come from a rise in direct purchase prices of steel and cost increases in components which contain steel.
If sanctions are enacted, the steel tariffs would be the second blow to the company, said Helen Marsteller, company spokeswoman.
The company exported $310 million worth of products during 2002, some of which went to Europe. A specific breakdown was not available Tuesday, Marsteller said.
York International looks to 2004 to bring some relief in steel prices, but the cost will still be higher than the prices in 2002, Marsteller said.
The E.U.'s threat outlined 100 percent duties on goods that would price American goods out of the market.
York International's primary international competitors are Carrier, Trane, local European manufacturers and Japanese manufacturers, according to Securities and Exchange Commission documents.
Nearly half of the country's firms using steel shifted some of their purchases to domestic steel following tariffs, the United States International Trade Commission on the Steel Tariffs said in a September report.

November 13 - R&D at Zamil Air Conditioners
The R&D department at ZAC has tested and introduced a slew of technologies and products in recent times to cope with customer requirements, new market segments, and new standards pertaining to improvement in human living conditions.
Here are some examples of ongoing efforts at ZAC R&D:
Consumer Products
Window and Mini-Splits
Besides the standard anti-bacterial filters, a new ionizing filter was added to mini- split systems to enhance the air purifying process and generate a healthy level of negative ions to increase air freshness and cleanliness.
To enhance levels of Oxygen in the surrounding, a program is under way to generate healthy levels of O2 in places requiring this process such as crowded rooms and places with high CO2 output.
To make life a bit easier, and to save energy, the new GX/GL series of minisplit units retain the operational 'mobility' pioneered by ZAC two years ago; "Now you can 'talk' to your unit via mobile telephones to switch them on/off, to set heat or cool mode, and to set right temperatures" says Hashim Bunyan, Director R&D at ZAC.
Unitary and Applied Products
Medium and large size products
ZAC R&D together with business partners is currently engaged in the development of a new scroll technology meant to improve overall efficiency of medium size refrigeration plants. The market launch of such system, as well as a reliable multi-split condenser, is due for launch in coming few weeks.
On higher range systems, such as Packaged Units and Air-handlers, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) systems have already been introduced in local and international markets. Most of the ZAC units are now equipped with economizers incorporating state-of-the-art controls; CO2 monitors to activate fresh air in case of high CO2 presence, and UV light source to destroy bacterial growth inside the AC equipment.
Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) has been remarkably improved to new international levels, utilizing combinations of scroll compressors and high-efficiency Zamil Heat Exchangers and other efficiency improvement designs and measures.
In this respect ZAC Screw-compressor chillers offer a package named "Economiser" for improving the cooling capacity - by 8-12% in the range between 40-500 TR, without any extra consumption of electrical energy.
Technology Initiatives
While IAQ and Energy matters remain the core of ZAC research, other initiatives are also being pursued with due importance. New Microprocessor controls and new generation of Programmable Logic Controllers have been added to ZAC unitary range of equipment and large packaged plants. These new controllers make it easy to monitor and control the air conditioning plants even from remote locations, and by GSM technology or Internet in some products.
After a successful introduction in Europe, the GSM monitoring is soon being launched in Saudi Arabia as well.
On environmentally friendly refrigerants, ZAC now regularly produces R134a Chillers and AHUs, and has completed the design and testing of all consumer products up to 5 Tons (Window/ Mini Split/ Ducted split with scroll compressors) with R407C.
ZAC is also now a leader in middleeast markets for Rotary compressor units, after it developed with Sanyo Compressors the first successful design of room air conditioners for tropical areas 3 years ago. The rotary now extends over wider range of products, making units quieter, more efficient and lower cost to the end-user.
The Tele-communication market has been at ZAC focus with design and market introduction of special vertical package units for the mobile industry in 3, 4, 5 ton capacities for both 60Hz market (the PV series) and 50Hz market (the PF series) complete with their standard and lead lag controllers.
Looking Ahead
The ZAC R&D continues its growth in modern tools; there are new labs underway, including the new Life Endurance and Design Qualification testing laboratories for consumer products, and a new Chiller testing lab, designed by Intertek Testing company, ETL-Semko of Courtland , NY, USA. Both the labs are expected to be commissioned during Nov/Dec 2003.
November 12 - Refrigeration Market in Eastern Europe
A report by Frost & Sullivan shows a growth market for commercial refrigeration systems in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). From its present-day level of 422 million USD the market is expected to rise to around 770 million USD, representing around one million units by 2009. The main reasons for such rapid expansion are the coming integration of many CEE countries into the EU (European Union), the privatisation of former state-owned industries, increased investment from outside the CEE and the rise in living standards. Some of the leading EU supermarket chains are already established there.
Replacement and refurbishment will be important sectors as outdated food production and storage facilities are upgraded and more refrigerated transport introduced. The fastest growth will be in retail chiller and freezer cabinets.
The most progressive country is Poland, followed by the Czech republic and Hungary.

November 8 - AHR Expo 2004 Largest West Coast HVAC/R Event
Show management reports that the 2004 AHR ExpoO (Anaheim, Calif. January 26-28) is larger than any previous West Coast AHR Expo as of November 6, with 310,000 net square feet sold and more than 1,400 exhibiting companies signed up so far. The amount of exhibit space reserved to date in Anaheim exceeds the 301,000 net square feet of exhibits at the last West Coast AHR Expo (1998, San Francisco).
Large International Presence
According to the show organizer, the 2004 event is continuing the recent trend toward globalization. Over the past several years, the number of exhibitors headquartered outside of the United States has been on the increase. Presently, some 216 international exhibiting companies from 33 countries have signed up to display hundreds of new and innovative products. Solid representation of companies from around the globe includes more than 40 companies from Europe and three dozen from Pacific Rim countries with the majority of international support coming from more than 105 Canadian companies.
Mr. Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company, attributes some of this strong interest to the fact that the industry's leading event has not been to Southern California for more than a decade. "The West Coast region represents a strong HVACR market," Mr. Stevens pointed out. "AHR Expo is the only opportunity many of these HVACR professionals will have to see such a vast array of all the latest products and technologies from leading suppliers around the world."
AHR Expo 2004 Highlights
Highlights of the AHR Expo include two special show floor pavilions (Building Automation & Control and a Software Center) that will encourage attendees to participate in hands on demonstrations and view, test, and compare state-of-the-art technologies. In addition to the pavilions, many of the AHR Expo's Endorsing Associations will conduct free educational sessions. These associations will present information ranging from principles of business management to a variety of current technical developments. Complimentary building automation sessions will also explore four areas; marketing convergence, online capabilities, an XML update, and wireless controls. As always, ASHRAE is producing a large variety of sessions in conjunction with their annual winter meeting throughout the four days of the AHR Expo that will include numerous short courses with a nominal tuition charge and a free public session on improving residential HVAC energy efficiency.
November 7 - Makers Rush to Air Purifier Business
Triggered by the prevalence of SARS this year, air purifier exports to Asia are increasing. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will start full-scale exports of new-type "Beaver Air Purifier" with enzyme filter from early November. By fixing natural bacteriolytic enzyme on the filter's glass fiber by chemical bonding, airborne mold and bacteria are arrested and decomposed.
Although these air purifiers had been sold mainly in Japan before, demand for them increased in China and Southeast Asia, urgently exporting 2,000 units from April to June. MHI aims to sell 20,000 units during 2003.
Daikin Industries released models incorporating the photo catalyst function in China and Taiwan last year, selling 3,700 units in 2002. The company plans to sell 29,000 units this year. It seems that this sales goal may be attained due to the rapid sales increases from April onwards.
November 6 - Carel New Product for Heating/Cooling Regulation
A new product has joined the wide range of Carel solutions for temperature regulation: Pj32 heating/cooling, also named Plug-In Universal.
This product extends the current refrigeration Plug-In range, and allows the control of both the applications of the "cold world" and those that require temperatures ranging from -50 to +150°C.
The controller Pj32 is not a common thermostat for temperature regulation. It is a full range controller that uses from 1, 2 up to 3 relays and an NTC or PTC probe according to the model.
Single-output versions require a thermostat- like control, while the two-output version requires two thermostats connected to two independent probes, deadzone operation, alarm relays, and setpoint selection from digital input. Finally, the three-output model, which is unique in the current market of heating/cooling regulation, has an alarm output into the bargain.
Another important advantage of the new range Pj32 is the programming key.
Of course, this new product has also all the "plus" of the plug-in series like the removable panel, front mounting, plugin terminals, back-illuminated keyboard, 230 Vac power supply with internal transformer, double insulation, buzzer, etc.
Furthermore, an additional three-output version will be available in the foreseeable future. Besides the standard functions, the new model will allow control of the defrosting phases at both medium and low temperatures.
We trust that this new control will be to the satisfaction of our customers. Not only are its functions well above the market offer, but it relies on an already existing hardware design, that of its twin version for refrigeration control, which involves a very competitive final price.

Mr. Essex stated, "China has become our primary production base as well as a strategic high-growth market for the company. Fedders is the largest exporter of air conditioners from China and we intend to leverage this strength to continue penetrating other high-growth markets such as India and the Philippines, as well as strengthen our distribution in Europe of all the company's products." As reported in JARN issued on April 25, 2003, Fedders and Sunning Appliance Group, a nationwide appliance/electronics enterprise, headquartered in Nanjing, China, selling nearly one million air conditioners annually, commenced operation of their joint venture to manufacture split-type air conditioners in China. Fedders has also formed several other joint ventures with Chinese enterprises for the last few years.
November 3 - Kerosene Space Heater Business in Japan
Kerosene space heater business for 2003 has set off. Already in a big way new models are displayed at the store in the cold regions such as Hokkaido and Tohoku. In other districts, too, shop display will start in October. Especially, since room air conditioner (RAC) sales remained dull in this cool summer due to the long rainy season, there are many retailers willing enough to increase sales of kerosene space heaters.
In 2002, shipments of kerosene space heaters increased rapidly in early October due to the arrival of cold wave. However, since it was relatively warm in the beginning of December, sales of fan-driven, portable wick-fed and FF type heaters in 2002 dropped below those in 2001.
It is guessed that, thanks to the remarkable rise of halogen heaters, diffusion of heat pump ACs, dissemination of floor heating, the demand for kerosene space heaters and wick-fed heaters has somewhat shifted to halogen heaters and heat pump ACs. Especially, the demand for halogen heaters in 2002 season seems to have reached 3 ~ 3.5 million units (estimated by a maker), demand for portable wick-fed heaters seems to have been considerably grabbed away by that for halogen heaters. November 1 - York & Leading Trade Journals Join Russian Trade Show
International Exhibition Group (IEG) announced that York International, the largest independent supplier of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in the USA for food & beverage processing and storage and Refrigeration World & IL Freddo magazines, the leading trade publications in Europe serving the refrigeration & deep freezing industry, have become charter exhibitors for the new Refrigeration & DeepFreeze Trade Fair in Moscow on 09-12 December 2003.
York provides compressor units, chillers and ice machines to many of the largest food & agriculture producers, processors and distributors via an extensive branch & distribution system in Eastern Europe and Russia. "We are very excited about taking a major position in this event and being able to present our all-inclusive line of equipment and systems to the Russian food & beverage industry. This uniquely focused event has been needed for quite some time, especially now due to the booming market," stated Patrick Scott, Intn'l Sales Director for York.
Refrigeration World & IL Freddo became involved because "Many companies are looking for new markets and one of the very largest markets is Russia. Even though they have their own "cool & freezing" industry, the quality is not yet up to European or American standards. This is a big opportunity for many potential exhibitors. On the other hand, food & agriculture executives and equipment buyers are looking forward to getting good and interesting information. Refrigeration World, with nearly 75% of its circulation going to European refrigeration and freezer, buyers and sellers can provide the Russian market with the newest information about Europe and America, so it's a great opportunity for us as well" stated Eleonora Monti, Senior Editor of the magazines. Both Refrigeration World & IL Freddo magazines are the media sponsors for this event.
Refrigeration & DeepFreeze will take place on 09-12 December 2003 at the Triumph Pavilion, RosstroyExpo in Moscow, a new state-of-the-art exhibition facility.
