September 25 - Thailand: Production and Export Center
As reported in our May Special Edition, the local demand for RAC/ PACs in South Asian Market has been recovered, being estimated a little less than 2 million units level. Thailand is regarded as one of the largest markets, with the local demand of over 400,000 units in 2002. It is also a big RAC/PAC exporter.
There are many major Japanese subsidiary plants, such as Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba Carrier, Daikin, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Sharp and Fujitsu-General.
Each company is equipped with the sizeable production capacity in the range of half to one million units/year to take advantage of scale merit. In proportion to the price decrease of RACs in Japan , the ratio of RAC export to Japan from overseas especially from Thailand and China increases.
MHI has decided to transfer its RAC production from Japan to Thailand, which would lead to the reinforcement of human resources as well as of their present production and engineering facility in Thailand.
Beside the Japanese makers mentioned above, LG and Samsung from Korea are engaged in production here.
Trane and York USA are also engaged in local production and sales.
To aim at higher market share, 50 odd local makers and international players are struggling. Mitsubishi Electric has led the race and Saijo Denki, one of the top local makers, has enjoyed fair market share.
Among the local makers, there are some noted makers engaged in production of RAC/PACs for overseas OEMs.
They are Unifab Equipment (UniAire), Set Point, Firm Group (Season), Better Living (Airtemp), Bitwise (Tasaki), Unico (Amena), Saijo Denki, Uawithya Industry (Emerald) and so on. Products of these local producers have attracted many independent traders in the world. Most of them now line up HFC 407C models mainly for European market. Uni-Aire and Set Point have extensive lineup of light commercial ACs and packaged chillers. Total production of air conditioners last year is estimated at three million units.
Not only for air conditioners but for compressors, Thailand has played an important role as manufacturing and export center. There are compressor factories of Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric (Siam), MHI (Thacom) and Copeland for air conditioner use and Hitachi for refrigerator use.

September 7 - ASERCOM Symposium 2003
Optimization of controls for refrigeration/air conditioning systems can improve performance and efficiency substantially.
Energy consumption contributes by far the majority of greenhouse gas emissions over the lifetime of refrigeration and air conditioning systems - substantially more than any direct emissions of HFC refrigerants. One example: typically 14% of Germany's power consumption is used in these systems, and the figure is similar for other European countries. Hence efficiency improvements represent the way forward for refrigeration and air conditioning to contribute to emission reduction and the ASERCOM Symposium 2003 is therefore focused once again on energy reducing concepts.
Correct application of controls can have an important impact on the energy consumption of refrigerating systems and the potential for energy savings is substantial if the controls are optimally selected and intelligently used. Opportunities for application of controls will be presented and exemplified. The success of such measures in saving energy helps to better protect the environment by reducing CO2 emissions and lowering system operating costs.
All those with activities in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning (marketing, technical application and engineering and/or service) are invited to attend this interesting symposium and to participate in the discussion which will be simultaneously translated into three languages (English, German, French).

September 5 - ebm Offers Cost-Saving ECSYSTEMS Products
The ebm Group, a leading manufacturer of fans and external rotor motors, headquartered in Mulfingen, Germany, provides a wide range of costsaving products.
Cost saving - this is one of the many advantages of ebm's latest ECSYSTEMS product range.
Lower power consumption, lower installation costs and less motor heat in conjunction with low noise operation are the key arguments for ebm's new range of EC-PRODUCTS.
EC is standing for Electronically Commutated - which means brushless - DC motors.
This cost saving range of products exists of axial fans from diameter 200 up to 1000mm and centrifugal fans with backward curved impellers that are driven by high efficient ebm ECMOTORS of up to 3kW whose electronic is integrated in the motor.
The integration of the electronic into the motor makes the wiring of the EC-FANS very easy. The mains (100 - 277V 1phase or 200 - 480V 3phase 50/60Hz) is connected directly to the motor - just like a regular AC fan is being connected to mains.
All fans of this new range of ECPRODUCTS are easily speed controllable without the need of any further speed control devices. The speed control function is part of the electronics.
The speed control can be done by any 0-10V / PWM signal input or via the ebmBUS system. Handheld terminals or ebm's LISA software which can be integrated in any BMS System are available in order to set or change speeds or to check the current status of the fans.
In terms of airflow ebm's latest ECPRODUCT range sets also new standards.
Because ebm's EC-MOTORS can easily be operated above synchronous speed, the fan diameter / airflow ratio has suddenly a much wider range. The synchronous speed barrier is broken by ebm's EC-TECHNOLOGY.
The aluminium diecasted, sickle bladed and therefore low noise axial fan blades achieve airflow volumes of up to 32.000m3/h. The laser welded newly designed aluminium 3D impellers achieve up to 18.000m3/h.
Typical applications for these new products are air-cooled condensing units, evaporators, chillers, dry coolers or precise air conditioners, roof ventilators and air handling units.
