March 24 - Sandvik Offers New Flapper Valve Strip Seel for Compressors.
Specially formulated for the flapper valves of automotive and stationary air conditioning compressors, new Sandvik Hiflex (strip steel makes possible smaller, more efficient compressor designs. The new stainless steel provides more than 10% better bending fatigue strength and 25% better impact fatigue resistance when compared with common stainless flapper valve steels.
It enables compressor designers to miniaturize compressors, use thinner valve flaps, increase reliability, or boost compressor efficiency with greater valve lift.
Sandvik Hiflex steel can enhance new flapper valve designs in today's smaller, more energy-efficient air conditioning systems. It can also improve the reliability of existing valves prone to fatigue failures.
Sandvik Materials Technology research and development engineer explains, "This premium steel provides new opportunities for compressor designers thanks to its outstanding fatigue properties."
Tensile Strength, Damping Capacity
Flapper valves commonly regulate the flow of refrigerant gas to and from compressor cylinders and suffer fatigue failures due to cycling and impact stresses. The new steel not only has an increased tensile strength compared to common stainless valve steel, but also improved toughness. This means that the bending fatigue strength is improved without the drawback of higher notch sensitivity. Sandvik Hiflex also has a much improved internal damping capacity which explains the improved impact fatigue resistance. The improved damping capacity also leads to lower operational noise from the valve.
Sandvik Hiflex steel enables designers to reduce the size of valves and compressors by using shorter valve tongues to achieve the same valve lift.
Alternatively, the new steel permits increased valve lift to reduce pressure drop across the valve and boost compressor efficiency. In addition, thinner valve flaps can reduce mechanical losses.

March 10 - Hainan Puts Overall Ban on Use of CFCs.
China News Service reported that Hainan Province would totally prohibit the use of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) from December 31, 2002. A substance composed of carbon, fluorine and chlorine, CFC is often used as detergent, refrigerant, foaming agent or spraying agent. Exposed to the strong ultraviolet rays from the sun in the stratosphere, CFCs, being decomposed, radiate chlorine atoms which decompose the ozone layer.
Internationally, "Vienna Treaty for Ozone Layer Protection" was enacted in 1985 and "Montreal Protocol concerning the Substances Depleting the Ozone Layer" was enacted in 1987, while in China "Bill for Phaseout of Ozone Layer Depleting Substances" was enacted.
Guangming Daily reported that Hainan Government and industry representatives are eager to dispel CFCs and facilitate activities for environmental protection. By promulgating the "Decision on Creation of CFC-free Province" in 1999, Hainan Government has been gradually endeavoring to create a province which does not use CFCs.
While promoting a shift from CFC refrigerants to non-CFC refrigerants complying with the international industry standards, Hainan Government has been prohibiting production and use of CFCs, and promoting the introduction of refrigerating equipment which uses non-CFC refrigerant, and implementing a control system for special equipment using CFC refrigerant.
March 7 - JRAN is exhibiting at China Refrigeration 2003 being held in Beijing, China from April 9-11, 2003. Our booth No. is 9T002.
JARN Booth at China Refrigeration 2002, Shanghai.
JARN has always been attending major international exhibitions as one of the key points in its communication strategy. The company's efforts in this area for 2002 were absolutely remarkable. In the first months of the year, JARN participated in AHR Expo held in Atlantic City, USA - one of the world's most famous and largest exhibitions. And in 2003 JARN took part in AHR Expo 2003 in Chicago and CLIMATIZACION 2003 held in Madrid, Spain.
Furthermore, after exhibiting at China Refrigeration 2003, JARN is planning to participate in such exhibitions as HALFKO 2003 in Korea, Bangkok RHVAC (September, Thailand) and IKK 2003 Hanover (October, Germany).
March 5 - What many are calling the next generation of refrigerant compressor technology was featured at the 2003 AHR Expo in Chicago, January 27-30th, 2003. This technology, created by TURBOCOR, Inc. a leading edge compressor design and manufacturer, is so revolutionary that it was recently selected to receive the 2003 AHR Expo's prestigious Energy - Innovation Award.
The TURBOCOR compressor is up to 30% more efficient than conventional compressors. However, high efficiency is not this compressors only advantage. This compressor is also Oil-Free, unusually lightweight, extraordinarily quiet and it redefines soft-starts.
TURBOCOR was first to announce an achievement the industry has worked decades to achieve, an Oil-Free compressor design. This eliminates the potential for the oil to contaminate the refrigerant; something that can significantly degrade performance. This also eliminates the parasitic losses and maintenance of the associated oil management accessories: oil heaters, oil pumps, oil separators, oil filters, etc.
The Oil-Free nature of the compressor is, by itself, a huge step forward in compressor design. However, there is more, much more. For example, a 90-ton TURBOCOR compressor weighs only 265 pounds, 1/5th the weight of many conventional compressors. At less than 70 dBa, one literally cannot hear the compressor run given normal equipment room background noise levels. Finally, this compressor redefines soft-start, drawing only 2 amps compared to 300-500 amps required by conventional compressors.
Over the passed decades compressor technologies have evolved from reciprocating to screw and scroll compressors. Now comes the TURBOCOR centrifugal compressor, providing the advantages of a direct drive, multistage, hermetic centrifugal compressor in smaller tonnage applications, (60 to, with multiple compressors, 300 tons). This compressor can be used in water, evaporative cooled and air cooled chillers and in DX applications. It can also be used in retrofit applications, replacing conventional compressors in its size range.
March 3 - Major Japanese manufacturing companies are likely to attain the global warming gas reduction goals. According to the questionnaire survey conducted by a major Japanese newspaper concerning their plans for reducing CO2 in 2010, they replied that they will attain 12.9% reduction compared to 1990, topping 7% required by Japanese Government. 200 companies replied to the questions concerning the global warming gas emissions. To avoid overlapping calculations of CO2 generated by power generation and CO2 converted from electric power utilized by the manufacturing industry, reductions planned by 196 companies excluding 4 electric power companies were totaled. Large energy consuming industries such as iron & steel, chemical, electric machinery and general machinery industries are planning to carry out positive reduction measures. Supposing that no reduction measures are taken, emissions in 2010 are predicted to increase 5.1% compared to 1990.
At the Kyoto Protocol, Japanese Government agreed to realize 6% reduction in 2010 compared to 1990. Generally, since Japanese enterprises had been already taking steps for energy savings prior to 1990, it has been thought difficult to attain 7% of reduction goal imposed on the manufacturing industry. However, according to the current survey results, environment-oriented enterprises having a long-range vision towards 2010 judge that further reductions are possible towards the reduction goal.
A breakdown of reductions to be attained by respective measures in terms of simple average for surveyed companies shows that 57% can be attained by introduction/repair of new/existing energy saving equipment, 17% by shifts to fuels with small environmental load, and 6% by utilization of emission right dealings.
The survey also revealed that the cost required to reduce 1 ton of CO2 emissions was ?75,000 on the average.
